negro, was shot to death and his body
burned today, by a mob that pursued
him after he assaulted and fatally
wounded Mrs. Nettle , Gibson, a white
woman, slashed her brother with a
razor, and Bhot another negro and
made his victim's wife flee with him.

be a thing of the past In the metropo
lis and throughout the Empire state if
the Callan motor vehicle law, which
went Into effect fcl'ay, Is strictly en
forced. And the word has gone
forth among reckless drivers of auto
mobiles that the officials mean busi
ness and that violators of the statute
will soon find themselves on the In
side, looking out of a cell. . Many chaf
feurs and reckless drivers have been
deprived of their tags and the good
work will go merrily on, It is promis
ed, until . the whole pestiferous band
of "joy riders" are given something
resembling their Just deserts. Every
chaffeur has been "mugged" and other
methods of identification have been
mad euse of to the end that no guil
ty man escapes.
The callan law Is In many respects
the most stringent automobile legisla
tion enacted In any of the thirty-three
states which have passed statutes reg
ulalng mjotor vehicle traffic. In one
important provision, however, .. it is
more liberal than the laws of other
states, as it permits a maximum speed
of thirty miles an hour. This Is from
six to eighteen miles In excess of the
speed permitted In other states.
