4 HERE AND THERE.
"Bill" Stoddard, the Perry lumber
maker, Is winning popularity in the
role of "His Umps." He has officia
ted at most of the games this year
and knows the game thoroughly.
The University of Oregon establish
ed a precedent this spring when the
athletic council awarded an "0" to
James Neill. a La Grande boy, who
graduated fr.om the school this year.
Mr. Xeill was given his spurs primar
ily for faithful training in the athletic
departments through a period of four
years, in that time he did not 'qualify
by winning his letters In a collegiate
contest, but for the first time in the
history of the school, the council
saw fit to' rewaH his faithful train
ing in this manner.
Krowne, th man who will throw
'em off the big hill next Sunday in the
Enterprise game for la Grande, has
improved wonderfully since he left
here early in the season, and has
fought two glorious battle for Joseph

T (siting Team Tomorrow
La Grande will get view of Enta,
prise again tomorrow when the Wl-:
Iowa metropolis team comes herej
with Bilyou on the hill. Enterprise !
and La Grande played intensely inter
esting games earlier in the season and
there is no reason why the game to
morrow should not be up to the same
standard. Every game played here last
month has been worth witnessing, and
the same is predicted for Sunday.

When is a championship game not a
championship game? This is the
question that bothered Cove and Elgin
last Monday at Elgin, it was not fully
settled but the Observer advances the
opinion that there can be no champ
ionship game between clubs of dif
ferent organizations and territories
until each team is undisputably the
champion of the organization or club

Manion is a man with a real peg j
This was demonstrated in his game j
here with Joseph when he caught fot
the lake town. Ho keeps the wholej
team on its toes, as well. j
The liue-up for tomorrow's contestl
is still in doubt, but there will be'
strength in any event.
La Grande had as smooth a working
team, and players as well versed in
classy ball, during the past month, as
is needed in any scrub league. It is
likely that this will be maintained
with a varying degree of efficiency
from tow on, for on the whole the
team tomorrow should be well balanced.
Manager Phillips of Union advances
a new interpretation as to club stand
ings. He affirms that when a team
drops out of the league, and re-organizes
and eventually Joins the club,
she should assume a standing of 500.
The facts in the case are. there is no
rule covering such a procedure, and
It is only equitable that the team re
Fume Its original standing in the per
centage column.
