IOCS ACCIDENT,
Exwloslon of Blow Pipe Saturates Ills
Clothing and Ignites It '
Nate Zwelfel was badly burned and
narrowly escaped Instant death by
falling three stories through the ele
vator shaft in the Bohnenkamp .build
ing yesterdaw evening while work
ing on some plumbing oh-the roof of
the structure. His left arm. chest,
right hand and face are seriously
t-urned and it will be several weeks
before he Is fully recovered from the
effects of the accident.
The blowpipe used by the plumbers
on the roof of the building was out of
order , and In attempting to remedy
the fault, the connections broke, and
threw gasoline over Mr. Zweifel's
clothing with great force. The burn
ing torch Instantly Ignited the satu
rated clothing and quicker than words
can describe it, the flames'had work
ed havoc with his complexion. In
attempting to escape the gasoline and
fire, Mr. Zwelfel kept within 6 inches
of stepping Into the elevator shaft,
which would have meant Instant
death. Blinded and Buffering much
pain, he waa hurried 'to Dr. Moll
tor's office and prompt medical atten
tion will do much toward relieving
subsequent pain. Fortunately, . his
eyes escaped injury.
The Chautauqua committee will go
to Pendleton ... In the near future to
make arrangements for a special
train Folk's day, July 7th.
Bend will vote on a

. Strickland W. GUlllan, known
throughout the United States as a
humorist, writer and orator of rare
qualities, will not be one of the fea
tures of the coming Chautauqua here,
according to a ' letter received this
morning by the writer's brother, Dis
trict Superintendent ' J. D. Gillilan.
The local committee took the matter
up with the well known orator, en
deavoring to make him one of the
attractions for the Chautauqua here,
but he writes in his characteristic
style that he leaves June 30 for a
tour of 65 Chautauquas in 65 different
towns in 65 consecutive days and he
therefore could hardly find time to
appear In La Grande, much as he
would like to do so.
MARKETS CLOSELY WATCHED
Crate of Peaches Confiscated by frnit
Inspector this Morning.
La Grande's markets are being very
closely watched and there is little
chance of diseased fruit to reach the
consumer. Inspector Stlllwell this
morning discovered a diseased crate
of peaches and the lot was confis
cated forthwith. -
A quarter crate of apricots were
also confiscated during the tour of
Inspection by the county official.
