William R. Ladd, commonly known
as master mechanic on the 0. R. & N.
and well known In La Grande, is one
of the six who were injured In
yesterday's after-wreck accidents.
The report issued by the Observer
yesterday, was correct as . far as ' it
referred to the actual number
hurt in the wreck at Arlington! but
yesterday afternoon two others were
badly injured, among them Mr. Ladd.

These four men were injured in the
wreck itself, while Assistant Superln
tendent -'William R. Ladd and Theo.
Metca, a section hand, were painfully
hurt while clearing up the debris
They: were struck by a twisted rail,
which flew back and hurled them 20
feet away. Neither one, however, is
seriously injured. The six men were
brought to Portland by special train

to St. Vincent's Hospital for treat

Rains Loosen Bocks. , .
The wreck was caused indirectly by
the heavy rains which have prevailed
in Eastern Oregon for several days
past. - me iresnets naa loosened a
quantity of rock, from the face of a
perpendicular cliff, and a huge boul
der weighing; several tons was nre
clpitated onto tle track, Just a few
minutes before the arrival of the ex
tra freight. The train, consisting: of
Beven cars of merchandise and nine
empties, was speeding along at a rap-
Id pace when it reached the slight
curve where the rock slide occurred.
The engineer, J. G. Lebor, did not
see the obstruction In time to apply
brakes, and the pilot drove full force
Into the pile of rock. The; engine
topped the mass, clearing it, but the
tender followed by the 16 cars Jump
ed the track and rolled down the em
bankment to the brink of the river,
which runs but a few feet from the
track. The tender was. the only car
to topple Into the stream. , ;
The speed of the train was such
that 400 feet of track was ripped out
of the roadbed before the flying
wreckage cume to a stop, and debris
was scattered for several rods about
the scene. " :
The wreck was entirely unavoidable
as the watchman had passed the snot
only a short time before and found
the track clear.' The accident ronM
not have happened at a more for

passengers which were laid out Jy
the wreck was due at the spot for
several hours. Had . the rockslide
