flow from a spring high , up in the hills and flowed ind flowed
through the woods and fields until it fell into tho big river that runs
past the city. It was a tiny brook and very shallow In most places.

"When the little brook first began to flow through the woods it was very
happy. ' It found the sunshine warm and pleasant, and where It ran under the
trees the shade cooled it off, so that wherever It went It Was Very comfortable.
As It ran over the little rocks and stones In Its path and fell a few feet in
some places, making little waterfalls that looked like tiny Niagara falls, It
maae pieasant music an aay long.
' "But after awhile the little brook became lonesome It was In an out of
the way place, and few people came to sit on its bank and look at the rippling
water and listen to its cheery music. So tbe little brook began to long for
some one to talk to. It was very fond of children. .: : i:
, "So when the McFudge family came to live near tbe brook and Tommy
and Mary McFudge came to play there the brook was very happy again. -Of
course It couldn't tell them how happy It was, but it seemed to flow faster
when they were near and make more pleasant music as it flowed.
"At first Mrs. McFudge was afraid to let the children play near the brook
for fear they would fall In and be drowned1. :. But they promised to be very
careful, and the little brook seemed bo quiet and pleasant that Mrs. McFudge
soon lost her fear. - - ' '; : -. ,-.
"One day, however, a sad thing happened. A pretty little flower bad
fallen Into the brook and was being carried down to the big river. Mary and
Tommy were playing near the brook, and Mary asked her brother to get the
flower for her... Tfhe brook tried to warn Tommy not to lean out too far, -but
he could not understand It, and before he knew what he was about he reached
out Just a little too much and fell into the water.
"The little brook seemed to know that Tommy was in danger and became
quite excited when he fell. : But it was a very friendly little brook and would
not let Tommy be harmed. It caught hold of .him and turned him round and
i carried him along a little way to a spot where It knew that Its water was
snauow, ana there It left Tommy. He was frightened and rather wet. but

"After that time Tommy and Mary were very careful Indeed not to lean
