Story
Why the Wren Is King Gjh.
of All the
"C
Hi:.;v.EN,w asked daddy as
evening story, ."can you tell

; "I think it's the eagle," said Jack, "because be can fly the highest" -"You
are both wrong," said daddy. "It Is the little wren." ; ' ' - '
"Why. daddy, how can It be that little bird?" asked Evelyn. ,j
"I'll tell you how be came to be king," said daddy. "Once upon 'a time
long time ago all the birds gathered in one place to choose a king After,
much talk. they an agreed that whichever bird flew the highest should be the
king. So, they all flew Into the air, each one as high as he could. After a
short time most of them became tired and gave up trying- to fly very hlh.
Of course the Uttle birds became tired first . . .
"Soon none of the birds was left In
uu iew wiuer wg Dirus. xney an became tired save the eagle, and,, after he
had flown so high in the air that most of the birds could hot even see him, he
came down in order to have all the birds greet him as king.
"But when he reached the ground and all the birds were assembled around
him there waa a great surprise for him. , Before any of the birds could call
him king up spoke the little wren, saying that he should be the king
" How Is that? asked the other birds. 'Didn't the eagle fly the hliihestr
- wo, said the Uttle wten. 'I did.
uV tuu i. uu ma dck, out
me. When he got way up In the air
any of the other birds he stopped to rest before coming down to the ground '
Then I spread my wings and flew up in the air a Uttle way above his back.
wnen ne started to come down I flew down also end lighted on his back again
without his noticing me, and he brought me safe to the ground. So you see
that although the eagle flew higher than any of the other birds, he did not
fly higher thaq I did.' .
"Then the eagle became very angry and said it was only a trick.' But aU
the other birds agreed.that as they had said that the bird which flew highest
should be king, the wren had won. 8c some people still say to this dav that
the wren Is king of the birds." ..... ...... ,
"But daddy," said Jack, "tt was only a trlcls of the wren's, 'wasn't ltr i
"I suppose so," said daddy. "But it also shows that the wren knew enough
to use his brains in picking out the bird that would be most likely to to hlrh
st In the air.? ' : , .
