nd Friendship.
What to declared ' by competent
architects' to be one of the most ar

use of the bureau of American repub
lics. The structure, of which former
President Roosevelt laid . the corner
atone two years ago, represents an
expenditure of fl.000.00O. of which
amount Andrew Carnegie contributed
$750,000 and the twenty-one , Ameri
can republics about $250,000. It has
oeen described by Andrew Carnezle
as a "temple of peace, commerce and
friendship," and former Secretary
Root called it a "capItol in the canital
of the United States of all the Ameri
can nations." ; -
The building occupies one of ' the
best sites In Washington, at the Umr.
tlon of the White lot mall and Poto-
mac park, overlooking the Potomac
river. It has a frontage of 100 feet
nd a depth of 200 feet and stands
aioue on a Ave acre tract of land for
meny known as van Ness park. The
entire exterior is faced with white
Georgia marble. , The front of the
building carries two monumental mar.
ble statuary groups, representing re
spectively rvorto and South America.
Above the former Is a nanel deDicHn
Washington's farewell to his generals
as tne Beginning of the era of peace
ful governments in North America and
the other showing the pertlng be
tween Bolivar and San Martin, the
liberators of South America.
The style of architecture is In a gen
eral way reminiscent of the best Latin
American type of about 100 years ago.
Entering through large bronze doors,
one faces the courtyard, which in
some respects is the most remarkable
feature of the building. It is 60 by 52
feet and la covered by a laree alldlmr
glass roof operated by electricity, so
mat u can Be closed In winter.
Largo Asiombly Hall.
The courtyard has an electric fonn.
tain in the center, with tropical plants
and trees on the sides. The fountain
is elaborate and was designed by Mrs,
iiarry Payne Whitney, daughter of
the late Cornelius Vanderbilt It nlava
in all the colors which are shown in
the flags of the American republics.
un tne south side of the first floor
are offices for the clerical staff of the
bureau. On the north side Is the Co
lumbus Memorial library, with a ca
pacity of 175,000 volumes. On the
second floor are the assembly hall,
board rooms and offices of the officials
of the bureau. The assembly hall is
102 by 70 feet. It will seat more than
a thousand persons and is specially de
signed for international conferences,
receptions to distinguished foreigners
and other ceremonies.
