The visit of Judge Webster and Road
Expert Eldrldge, to La Grande, has
brought results, in that people are
discussing the road question. Just
how long they will discuss remains
to be seen, for everyone admits that
the road question is of .vital Import
ance, and they have admitted this
Spokane states she Is considering
having separate schools for the boys
and girls. Spokane is probably not
sincerely thinking of such a thing.
More likely August Wolf saw a chance
to get Spokane's name in the head
lines of all the papers by sending out
the story and took advantage of the
advertising feature. If Spokane should
do such a thing she will be laughed at
from Portland, Maine, to Portland,
Oregon, and she should be.
there Las been no concert of action
toward '. bettering conditions by the
people.
Union county Is ahead of other coun
ties in Oregon, tha is almost all of
the other " counties, for the county
court here is alive to the road situation.
A few days ago the writer, in com
pany ; with others, visited points In
the valley and a few miles out of La
Grande we encountered the steam rol
ler at work macadamizing a country
road, It looked good to us and upon
inquiry we found that several roileB
of road had been Improved In the
same manner In Union county.
' This means something. No farmer
can overlook such an Improvement
and people living in the city and towns
will appreciate it But the farmer is
the man of all men who is entitled to
good roada. : It is nice to have auto
mobile highways, for the farmer now
adaya Is the chief automobile user, but
the road that will permit one team of
horses to haul what it used to require
two teams to do is the road that saves
money to the farmer and enables him
to market j his products without the
expense he formerly bad. ",
Judge Webster took a good view
of road building and advocated bond
ing counties for the work, which

road building it seems to us that this
t county is in the lead, and that it will
require neighboring counties some
time to catch up.
Along the coast in where' good roads
campaigns are badly needed. In Coos
county there in a small mileage , of
highways yet a great part of the year
these are impassable. The same is
true In Tillamook county' 'and also
around Aberdeen and South Rend.

The Gypsy Girl's Lore," .
A dramatic picture which ends hap- (
pily, though for a time it looks as
though the Gypsies were going to be
lynched for a crime of which they
were innocent, is the story, under the
above caption at the Isis. ' The weak
feature is that the mob would listen
to a colored boy A frenzied mob
would not be likely to do that any
where, much less', perhaps, in the sec
tion where the scene of this story- is
laid.; There la a heart story running
through It and the discovery of the
perfidy, of a lover .Is what leads to
the difficulty. The acting in sympa
thetic and realistic, -particularly in
the mob scenes. ..The photography Il
lustrates the steady. Improvement of
this -firm in that department and alto
gether it is a very, satisfactory film.
