A MAX WHO HAS MADE GOOD
Tom Richardson is in the city this
afternoon.
No one will remark, "who Is Tom
Richardson?"
That would be admission of never
of Oregon, for Tom Richardson has
made good as the leading pubillcity
man of the coast In doing this, Port
land and this state Lave gotten the
. benefit
I Now it does not matter who pays
Tom's salary, or whether he gets a
salary; you must Judge the man by
bis work. .. ,
The concrete essence of any propo
sition is the result. Tom Richardson
has got results Portland was Bleep
ing Just as many people In Union
county are now sleeping until Rich
ardson was attracted to this state.
The first thing he told Portlanders
; was to wake up and spend some mon
ey. Their hands went up in horror,
for they had led the simple, con
tended lire, hardly getting out of the
way of Btreet cars. But Richardson
Insisted and told them where money
pent would bring returns. He got
them to loosen a little, and a little
more. Later he forced them to
plunge right down In their hip pock
ers and unroll their bank book.
But it was not long, until things
began to happen. New additions were
laid out for Portland, Just as new ad
ditions will soon be laid out for La
Grande, admitting that things will
; run here on a much smaller scale
than they did In Portland. Then came '
the easterner who knew nothing)
about Portland and the northwest un-
til he read some of Tom Richardson's
ITOBpel truths. The easterner saw
opportunities that the moss backed !
settle In Portland had walked over for '
for fifty years. He saw where waste '
land could be made to produce. He'
saw a power site that could harness
a stream and turn nature's power
Into a commercial product He saw
corner lots In Pertland, and bought
them.
And then the fireworks begun.
Portland real estate more than dou-
bled and many said, "Oh. it Is too.
high. It Is a fickle boom and will,
drop." .
But Instead of dropping It dou-
Diea again and again
People grew rich In a week. Sev
en story buildings are now common
In Portland. Big deals are being
made every day.

With oar ample resources and facilities we can render job efficient
service and handle jonr business to your entire stalsfactloa
And through It all can be traced
the fine Italian hand of Tom Rich
ardson who touched a match to the
magazine and woke Portland up.
La Grande needs a Tom Richardson
If there is another left - in the uni
verse. ' He would be . worth a prince
ly salary for real estate values alone
would follow the Portland example
in less than six months.
HE3iEY SEEKS THE EAST.
It Is reliably stated that Francis
Heney will soon leave the west and
locate In New York. Rather a natu
ral course for Mr. Heney to pursue.
He will no doubt be better satisfied
in the metropolis, for here in the west
after a man has been as active as
Mr. Heney has, there would be a
long list of enemies ready to bom
bard him at the least chance.
His stay in the west has brought
a great deal of good. It has helped
start things in a better way, but Mr.
Heney has fought his best fights. Con
tinuation of his former course would
grow monotonous to the people es
pecially when so few convictions
have followed. f
AH will admit 'it was well for the
west that Heney took an active part
admitting also that things 'will be
run ho tor TwAiiBn of his action, but
the same people feel it is no mis
take on Heney's part to locate In
New York.
Old Iowa with her republican foun
dation stones firmly "set In a bed of
party cement cannot see the new tar
iff measure through Taft's glasses.
Iowa says It Is wrong and shows why
she thinks bo. But that doesnot
mean that Iowa win leave the repub
lican ranks. It merely indicates that
she Is not in line with one issue
that a republican president believes
Is right. Iowa will try to convince
Taft and failing to do so will ad
here all the more closely to the re
publican party and endeavor to right
what Bhe believes to be wrong in
the next national convention. And
that Is the way to do business.
When Louis Hill of the Northern
Pacific railroad, reached Burns we
would like to know what was
the first thing Frank Davey said to
him. Perhaps Is was what the gov
ernor of North Carolina said to the
governor of Couth Carolina, but more
likely Frank rose to his full height
and swore In sage brush language
about the blankety blank neglect
the railroads had been giving Harney
county.
Baker City has employed Mr. Ash
ley, former private secretary for Wm
McMurray of the 0. R. & N. as her
publicity agent. This is the first time
Baker has tried the paid booster prop
osltlon and we sincerely hope she
will get rich returns from her Invest
ment.
