LA GH4XDE IS TOO MODEST.
SOIL the defeat of the republican
congressional candidate in that New
York district was not ' unexpected.
Just remember what a load the party
has been carrying in New York for
some time, and. to add to it all came
the charge and proof of bribery in
one section of the state.
It was the Oregonian a few days
go that said, "over in the Grande
Konde valley where people hare heen
raising excellent fruit and have baea
too modest to say anything about it "J
And that is the truth. Give Qriudo
Jlonde valUy the Ifood' River "spiel
ers" or the Medford bunch, who .1U
regard modesty as the' ballet daK:i
dlsrepards propriety and the Grande
Ronde valley will be heard of around
the world in a very short time. -
We must strike the nappy med'.etn
between Medford's bunch and our own
tfmidlty.' We must begin megaphon
lu0 ttuu kotsp a up. l ne goods are
here to deliver. Land is cheaper to
day In this valley, than It .should pe,
nd much cheaper than any . plr.j
else In the entire northwest.
- We need an unanimous spirit li
push forward on some slogan lint
will bring results. Forget any local
ritufttion that may not exactly pHtso
you. ; forget any quarrels you "navs
had with a neighbor, and stanl h'
line for a campaign of honest effort

the public, but to Implant that sp'en-
did truth in the minds ' of all who
will hear and be convinced, ,,
It is the most Important thing to
the valley at the present time, ar..1
i.' necessary we would suggest tr.at
each cltlsen put his foot on his mod
esty, loosen up his lungs, shake hands
with his neighbor and say, "we am

' H is decidedly refreshing to see the
attitude of pfopetty owners on , the
Question of municipal improvement.
When paving was first tallteJ jDf yot
, s few citizens raised an objectirth.'
They thought It wis useless to spqnd
money In that way, for had not Jhe
old streets done good, service in th?
, past? .The same element thought tl
- fid board sidewalks had been yood
enough1 fov them to walk upon .and
why expend money for concrete
i. walks, and so "on down the line of
things that aro needed. .
But there Is a happy change over
coming almost all of those who felt
as above described. They are ieelng
ihlngs In a different flight. Just who
lifted the veil.' we cannot say but It
hot been lifted. Now, Instead , of
complaining Against paving the peo
ple residing In certain districts-are
naming the kind of. paving , desired,'
and throughout the city . the spirit t
of progression Is notlcablc nad mark-.
"It has ceased to be a question, of
whether or not La Grande will pave,
but has reached a point as to how
much La Grande will pave, and there
la a possibility that this city before
she Is through will have put In hard
v surface pavement over a larger area
