"A Girl at the Helm" has a sensible
plot bound with pleasing, catchy mus
ic of the" whistling sort and chaptered
with genuine fun. The story Is clean
cut and attractive, romantic ,.; and
breezy without being tough.'

It Is a strange, strange story that
surrounds beautiful "Zaluma" the fa
vorite daughter of the former Sultan
of Turkey, now demised. Some years
ago, before the death of the Sultan,
his highness was in consultation with
one of his officers. His highness spoke
of his approaching death and express
ed much fear that his favorite daugh
ter "Zaluna" might be the mistress of
his successors harem, as that Sultan
to be had Intimated what a beautiful
woman "Zaluna" would be among his
contemplated harem. The Sultan was
at his wits end ; his ' trusted officers
could offer no suggestion. What could
he do to save "Zaluna" his favorite
daughter. The wise men were sent for
and secret cqnsultations were held
lasting for days. '''At last "Zaluna's"
fate was agreed upon by these "wise
men of Turkey and so the news was ,
heralded to the Sultan who bade the ,
herald bearer to secretly lead the wise
men to the council room. There with
much bowing and salaaming, it was.
so ordained the the beautiful Zaluma
should be turned into a picture, the;
like of which the world had never be
fore seeni There was no alternative,
for the Sultan In order to save Zaluna
from his successor's harem, this was
done.' His successor ascended the
throne and 'immediately began his
selection of his harem, and great was
his rage when he discovered Zaluna's
fate. He ordered the picture sold, that
It might be forever removed from his
sight This was done, the purchaser
being a wealthy American, and the
painting was sent to the United States
and placed In the home of Its pur
chaser. With great pride the painting
of "Zaluna" was show to all who
called. One day Its owner was admir
ing his wonderful work of att when
a strange transformation took place.
Was he dreaming? No! by some un
seen power or witchery Zaluna was
turning back to life. She moved, she
smiled "and then stepped from her
gilded frame. Zaluna was again a-beau
tlful, living, breathing flesh and blood
being. All this has been written into a
comedy, and a comedy it Is. The Za
luna of Miss Pringle's is fascinating,
charming and beautiful. The comedy
Is so funny that you laugh, hollow,
scream and shout. None of the com
mon horse play, nor slap stick kind,
but a clean, wholesome, invigorating
comedy. "Zaluna" Is .Miss Pringle's
best effort. Tonight at the Steward
opera house.
"Facing the Music," Tonight
This funny farce comedy will be
seen for the last time tonight at the
Pastime. It will be remembered that
this is the piece in which James J
Corbett starred for so long. i
Tomorrow night, "My Friend from
India," will be presented. As this Is
the farewell week of the National
Stock Compan yln La Grande, the
Pastime is sure to be crowded for the
rest of the week.
