Farther away than ever from a clue the police of this city is In a desperate battle with a single handed bandit-murderer who have baffled every effort that has been made to capture him and laugh sneering In the faces of the o.Hcers since December 4. Last night he com mitted another robbery, the boldest of hla record. While two policemen marched up and down In front of the Gleason Couneen Drug Store' which he has twice robbed previously, the bandit outlaw entered the Char lott candy store only three doors away and held up the place. He then made ' his 5cc3sful esca after Informing t his victims that there .were two po- '' llcemen only three doors away and .' that they could go and console them-., seleves by telling their troubles to the police. He commits hold ups, mur der and robbery imder the very nose of the police and In the busy marts of tha-city with apparently no thought of ever belflg'-cpptured. . In fact he gives the impression that he Is doing ' his work under the noses of the po-; lice on purpose for the fun of the thing as there Is plenty of places In the city where he could operate with a great deal more security than In the busy streets. : MARGARET CUNDIFF DEAD. :-V ".. -A- Former La Grande Teacher Passes - mi Away at Frisco. - Word has been received her from San Francisco that Margaret Cun dlfit Wither, two years ago a member of the La Grande High School faculty, died last Sunda yof pneumonia.
