High Glee Over Game.
In
Displaying a remarkable gift of
detecting the direction of La Grande's
piays, playing like demno3 themselves
Cove was yesterday able to tins down
the curtain on the 1909 high school
football In this city w(th a narrow de
feat for the home team.
Cove scored early in the game call-
t t the &J&cci3 frsu-it oousiaeraoiy
- tnat nan attendea a' game tnis
year. It was a gruelling game and
La Grande "died" trying valiently to
overcome the lead attained by Cove
when after a ser es of rapid fire punts
Cove ran 25 yards for the only touch
down of the game. Only once did La
Grande get back Into dangerous terri
tory for Cove and tkat time their
hardest efforts failed to register a
touchdown, notwithstanding tit;;t Mey
ers on a tripple pass.- which defeated
Cove last year ran 20 yards to be
downed on the 20-yard line. From here
the ball was worked to the 9-yard line
but Cove held. La Grande in turn
forced Cove to punt the kick going
shorty allowing La Grande to again
work forward uv9 a fumble stopped
the progress.
It was Meyers, the .Cove, left end,
well known in the couufy for his prow
ess In professional and f:ci:ii-i..-c.t'cj:-lonal
baseball' circles, that spelled
victory for Cove. With a tremendous
speed and aggressiveness he broko up
play after play before they were under
wry. Jlls speed often carried him to
the scene of the play in time to stop
attacks aimed at the opposite direc
tion. It seemed as though. lie and Che
nault took turns about, Cbenault com
ing through from his guar,d position.
Aside from these two men Cove has
only ordinary players in the. line ap.
Aside from the aggressiveness of the
two men named, who by the way, on
the average stopped 9 out of ten
plays befor they were gotten under
way, Cove had the ability, pnpei
human, human or mechanical the
spectators will probably never know
which to direct their defense at the
exact location and at the exact mo
ment where and when La Grande's
offense would strike. Cove's linemen
were directed almost with faultless
I reeislon where to expert the attack
as soon as the play had been outlined.
Cove triad the forward pass rjpeat-
fl'y. and made three successful one.
T'o failures in succession we. -a re-
opoaelble foi la Grand gettin-; closo
to th goal. The locals tried it several
times, too, and pulled off two lucky
ones. On its punts which were recov
ered by speedly ends and tackles, La
Grande made the greatest yardage. La
Grande tried hard but failed.
Cove has an active team; a determ
ined team and a lucky team. Jim
Dobbins, Ralph Reynolds and Doctor
Zimmerman were the officials of the
game. Due to the commendable con
duet of the players and the watchful
eyes of the officials, the game passed
off without a single Instance of dis
tasteful incidents to mar the attrac
tion.
