apples, purchased by White Bros. &
Crfumb Co., of Lewiston. through Gar
rit Oldenburg, was shipped out yester
day, and though most of tbe apple crop
is already bought, there are still con
siderable quantity of apples yet to go

Prices have been round the dollar
mark for most of the apples purchas
ed thus far and the growers are faring
well financiall.

Passenger Brakeman James O'Sull-
ivan, who was seriously injured near
Telocaset two months ago when iie
stepped from an O. R. & N., passenger
train at night and fell to the bottom
of a culvert, was released from the
hospital in Portland last Thursday,
and was in La Grande this morning en
route to Joseph. Mr. O'Sulllvsn is now
practically over the effects of the fall
but will not resume bis run for a few
day b yet.

t Chicago, Nov. 23. A special election
Is being held In the Sixth Congression
al District to day to fill the vacancy
caused by the resignation of Congreso-
man William Lorimer. William J. Mox-
ley is the regular republican candi
date, and Frank S. Ryan the democrat
ic aspirant Carl L. Barns appears f.s
an Independent republican homines by
petition.
The election will be taken as an In
dication of popular sentiment in the
middle west. The democrats ara con
fident of victory, declaring that "Can-
nonism" and the Aldrlch tariff bill are
sufficient to defeat any republican can
didate. The union labor element is!
showing great Interest in the outcome.
