Pete Grant left this morning for a business visit In Pendleton. Ed. Rumble left today on a business trip to Joseph. J. J. Carr left today on a business trip to Joseph. He will return'tomor row. . V. F. Chatten of Summerville spent last evening in this city on a business trip. D. C. Brichoux, the well known local timber cruiser returned last evening from a trip to Talocaset Attorney C. E. Cochran left last night for Union to look after some legal business. J. B. McKennon and F. B. Woodell were In from Summerville last even ing on a' brief business visit. E. R. Comstock, a well known local barber, went to Elgin today on a busi ness visit. Attorney F. B. V.'V.zzo. of Union came down this morning to transact busi ness at the court house. . Mrs. Graybel of Kamela came down this morning to spend the day in the . city looking after private' biminpo Miss Jesse McDonald returned home to Wallowa this morning after a week's visit at the home of Mr .and Mrs. Tur ner Oliver. Miss Pauline Lederlee returned this morning from Pendleton where she has been visiting her father since Saturday night. ' Deaconess Alice Knight of the East ern Oregon Episcopal Missionary Jurisdiction arrived last evening for a visit in this city. . Frank Beaudoun, a wealthy stock man of Joseph was in the city last evening on his way to Union to visit friends. Bert and John Robb of Summerville were among the visitors on last even ing's train that came in to see the show. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hood and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Connor of Wallowa, came in last evening from the East and left this forenoon for their homes in the valley. T. G. Wilson of Cove came in last evening to take in the show at the forenoon for their homes in the valley. T.'G. Curtiss, northwest manager of the Germania Life Insurance Com pany arrived this morning from New York City and spent the day conferr ing with G. R. Carlock, supervisor of agents for this district. ' . William Armstrong, an old timer in Union county but now living at Galena left for home last evening after stop ping off a day iu this city. Mr. Arm strong has Just returned from an en tended visit In the east where he vis it id his childhood's home in Washing ton, D. C. 1200 BOOKS FOR SCHOOLS COUNTT LIBRARIES ARE RAPIDLY BEIXG RESERVED. Big Shipments Being Sent Out to Each Of the Districts. Twelve hundred books will be added the libraries of the public schools of Union county by Saturday, according to the report of Superintendent E. E. Braggs today. La Grande's share of the books were delivered today and those going to Union, Cove, Elgin and North Powder are boxed and ready for shipment. Those places ar to dc uj distributing points for the books and clerks of the district may get their share from the place that the school district gets their mail. According to a letter received from the state library commission Superin tendet Bragg is to receive, in the spring about a dozea books on teach ing, which he will loan to the teachers Dr. W. D. A A. - At the home of Mrs. W. L. Bren holts yesterday afternoon the Current Topic Club was entertained. The sub ject was Egypt, taken from Stoddard's lecturer. Tha readers were Mrs.. J. E. Stevenso. Mrs. Geo. H. Currey. Severa linvited guests were present and an instructive and entertaining afternoon was enjoyed by those pres ent. .One of the pleasant social functions of the season was the surprise party last evening given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Martin, residents of Cove, for the past 44 years, who are about to take their departure for Arlington. California where they expect to spend the winter. Mr. and Mrs. Kogensparger who prepared the surprise had their parlors darkened and a company as came to the home The evening ue pleasantly spent v;:th games of aU kinds. Of central and chief interest this week in social circles Is the La Jeun esse dancing party tomorrow night Arrangments for an evening up to the standard of the first two parties have been made. COUNTY JAIL Additional security is being made at the county jail by the screening of the windows on the outside. Inside the glass is covered by the heavy steel bars. On the outside the county court, through Charles Goodnough the contractor, Is putlng heavy steel wire screens. These will protect the glass and prevent anything from being pas sed from on the outside. There are at present four boarders in the county jail. Three are working the road, while Fred Taylor, the alleged burgl lar is awaiting a hearing before the grand jury. MRS. BOB DEAD GENIAL LADY KNOWN AS "SRAND MOTHER" SUCCUMBS: Funeral Will Be Held Tomorrow After Noon From Bodmer Home. , Died, at her home in Joseph, yester day afternoon, November 8, Mrs. Anna Bodmer. Mrs. Bodmer, whose maiden name was Anna Ochsner, was born in Swltz erland, sixty-four years ago. When six years of age she came with her par ents to Waumandee, Wis., where her girlhood days were spent. When a young woman she married Otto Bod mer and lived until 1890 at Bangor, Wis. Here, nine of their children were born to them. - ' ' In 1890 the family came to Oregon and soon after Mrs. Bodmer was left a widow. For the past seven years her home has been at Baker , City with a j son and daughter. Last September the i went with two of her sons to her new j home at Joseph.. Since that time her health has been falling rapidly from the encroachment of that -dread dis-1 ease, cancer. Besides Tuniiberless friends and many relatives, she leaves to mourn her loss seven children, one daughter, , Mrs. Herbert Chandler of Baker City, j and six sons; H. A. Bodmer, of La Grande; Armin and Vernon of Joseph; Otto of Wallowa and Earnest and i Oscar of Paradise. Mrs. Bodmer, lovingly known, as Grandma by her many friends, will long live in their memories as an in spiration for good. Her pathway In life was Illuminated by kindly deeds and now that ber busy hands are at rest and the end of her Journey has been reached, all who know her can REPAIRING say, "It is well with her."
