convicts in Texas penal Institutions
have been killed by inhuman beatings
and cruel treatment during the past
three years. The revelations were
brought" about ty a legislative inves
tigating committee. It is proving very
difficult to wring the evidence from
tho criminals that are now being ex
amined. Many of them are afraid of
the enmity of the guards. One "lifer"
declared that he witnessed three whip
pings within the Bast few davs result
ing thd death of the victims.'

were made public yesterday but was
from private Information that- had
been received by her. The dispatch
goes on to state that Roosevelt has
at last fallen a victim to the fatal
fevers of that region.
The American ambassy here places
no credance on the report and de
clares that If any thing had occurred
to Mr. Roosevelt that they would have
been sure to have known of It.
