Portland, Nov. 3.--(Speclal.) The
great state of Oregon Is growing In
population each year, and as in other
states the need of charitable institu
tions are greater. Among those is the
Boys and Girls Air Society, whose shel
tering armi reach put and help the
lltle folks. It has now nearly 600 de
pendent children under its care placed !
out In family homes in all parts of the '
state and more are coming in every
day. The receiving home of th swWv
is taxed to' Its utmost capacity sixty
on hand, being Its daily capacity dur
ing the past year. The society has
found It necescary to enlarge Its pres
ent quarters and have built a wing
the original building containing 15
rooms", at a cost of nearly $7000. Two
thousand dollars of this sum was ap
propriated by the state and the balance
made up by voluntary contributions
from philonthoplc people of the city
of Portland. But this building has to
be fln'shed, bo that the wants of the
institution are greater than ever this
year.; The four dormitories containing
ten beds each, the management hopes
will be furnished by the county court,
the cost of furnishing each domitory
being $175. Already Wasco county has
furnished one and Yamhill another.
There are still two empty.
Besides the above, groceries, bedding
canned goods of all kinds, fruits and
vegetables of all kinds vill be very
acceptable as heretofore, and during
thanksgiving week will be carried free
by both the railroad company and by
Wells Fargo Express Company as well
as by all the boats runlnng into Port
land. The children' of the public
schools will also remember that their
annual gifts are looked forward to by
all the children of the "Home." All
packages should be , plainly marked

School Board Looking For Succtmsor
To Fill Position.
Another change Is to be made in the
city teaching force. The resignation of
Professor Griswold of the commercial
department of the high school has
been In the hands of Clerk Williams
since yesterday. It is to take effect
Friday at the close of the month.
The school board has been scurry
ing about this week to find a possible
successor to Mr. Griswold but no name
has been announced. A meeting of the
board will probably be held this week
at which time a new man will be elect
ed. Prof. Griswold came here from
North Dakota. v , '
