Education Day Brings Out Comineud
able Actio by Grange.
Brim full of enthusiasm, largely at
tended, highly educational, was edu
cation day at the Elue Mountain
Grange Hall Saturday afternoon. The
members of the Grange held a closed
session during the morning, but by
the time the buggies and automobiles
began to arrive with their occupants
from La Grande and Island City, the
doors were wide open, and a bountiful
luncheon was ln waiting.
After the grangers and their guests
had given up trying to dispose of all
the delicious cakes, salads and pies,
as well as other tempting foods, and
bad enjoyed a short time visiting the
lecturer Mr. .Roy. Gekler. called , thn
meeting to order and the program be

Following a sons: by" the Granee.
"The Dear Old Farm," the lecturer
gave a short synoposis of the work
of the Grange.
i ' Superintendent E. E. Bragg then
spoke of the advance of schools. His
address was clever and witty, and at
the same time showed forcibly that
the standards of education were ' In
finitely higher' than they were In the
days of our grand parents when the
tet books for young children were
gloomy ln tone, and the problems In
arlthemetic were tinged with cruelty,
and the pictures In the histories and
georgraphies portrayed victims burn
ing at the stake. ' ; ,
, That ; the rural schools would be
greatly benefitted by the consolidation
of several districts was the opinion
expressed by Miss Rose MulvehllL '
Miss Katherlne Gekler rendered a
a very, pleasing solo telling of the old
fashioned school gpmeu, and she was
followed by Mrs. W. F. Gekler with a
paper on the teaching of agricultural
subjects in rural schools. Her plea
for scientific Instruction in the culti
vation of farm products for the lad
who was to become a farmer was
strong and convincing. ?
A discussion on the Eighth grade
examinations led by C. D. Huffman
brought out many suggestive Ideas
regarding the feasibility of requiring
every child to pass the, heavy required
examination before being permitted to
pass on to the high Bchool grades. '
After a bright Hit tie recitation by
Edna Kelts, came an address by Prof.
Shirts of Summervllle on the need of
a Union county high school. He ably
discussed the ways and means of es
tablishing this much needed insutu
tion, showing that It would be a very
great advantage educationally and so-,
Hailv. to the county, and that under
the present system of high schools
there Iwere, not sufficient financial
support to render the schools entirely
adequate to meet the demands of the
times. He said that a strong agricul
tural course should be Introduced In
the county high school, also a course
ln domestic science. , .
Bnanlntlona were then read for the
establishment of Buch a . union high
school as-described by Prof. Shirts,
unon the motion of C D. Huffman
that the resolutions as read. j
