True Western Kindness. . .
A remarkable example of spontan
eous charity occurred on the Atlantic'
express, between Pendleton and La
Grande last night A destitute woman
with three children, all under five
years of age, was the beneficiary of an
outburst of benevolence which netted
her the handsome sum of 190.25.
At Pendleton, the woman, with a
babe In her arms and two little girl3
tugging at her skirts, boarded the train
gathering the tickets, the woman dug
up an armfull of small change, saying
that it was all the money that she had
and asked the conductor how far that
sum would carry her. ' ' - .
"If I. should overlook your oldest
child which is a half fare, this money
would "carry you, madame, over . tint
mountains to La Grande. This conver
sation and the fact that the children
were hungarliy eating a lunch of dry
bread caused the near by passengers
to gather about the woman and to ask

. The woman gave the name of lira. E.
Smith and said that she was working
her way to Grand Junction. Colorado,
to Join her mother; explained; her
shortage of funds by telling a pathetic
story of the violent death of her hus

frontier ranch in Alberta,

and her children to their home in
