For the next few , days Pitt
burg and Detroit will alternate as the
center ol' the American universe. As
every one knows the occasion is to
determine the supremacy of the one
city or the other In supporting the
most expert aggregation, of ball
players on earth. With each it is a
contest In which earnest civic pride
"la involved.' With the country at
large Interest Is hardly less Intense
for victory and defeat as these may
. be worked out, are really matters
of National moment In the sense that
the major body of the American poop-'
le entertain a distinct and commen
dable pride in the lusty young men
who will give the greatest exhibltlou
of tho greatest game ever played In
this or any other land. The event
Is American from the ground up.
This post-seasou series Is the
great, big, wholesome, popular sport
ing event of the year. It la an event
that commands the Interested attent
ion of all classes. There Is scarcely
any real, live American who escapes
the enthusiasm of it.
Consider the special trains which
have been and-wlll be run to the game
in the two cities; from New York
Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Toledo and
. , scores of other , smaller towns in

der the concessions which the rail
roads make to the fans, for instance,
a fare of $5 for round trip of SIS
miles less than 8 mills a mile. Con

the country .with which the news of

devoured. Get grip on all of these

It goes without saying that the suc-
cess of the Union county exposition
makes it a permanent feature to be
looked forward to annually for years
; to come.' Another opportunity lies at
the door of I a Grande that will draw
crowds from many miles equally as
large if not larger, as the county fair,
and that Is a chautauqua. This Inland
Empire Is developing rapidly and this
large and Inviting field will not . re-
' main unoccupied much longer. Now
Is the time for La Grande to move and
secure It This season the city of Ash-

portunities as they should, simply be
cause they have not investigated.
It took the business men of La
Grande over two years to see the ad
vantages of holding a fair in the city
without races; finally the idea took
root and they made a grand success
of it and so they can of a chautauqua.
The two will not conflict in the least
and the more large, first class attrac
tions that any city offers the greater
will become its commercial phere.
According to a report compiled by
Acting Secretary of State Frank Loy
ell, that office has done an enormous
business for the state during the year
of 1909, compared with that of 1908.
After deducting the Insurance fees
which were paid to the Insurance com
missloner Blnce March 1, the fees paid
Into the state treasury from October 1
1908 to September 1, 1909 amounted to
$63,334.58, compared with $03,052.06
from' October 1,1907 to September 3,
1908. The number of automobile cer
tificates that were Issued for the first
nine months of 1909 amounted to 1064
compared to the first nine months in
1908, which numbered 643. The ad
vance of business In the secretary of
state's office means that the develop
ment going on throughout the state
are rapidly gaining headway, as this
office Is the most important and the
busiest place in the capitol building.
Poultrymen have launched a move
ment that is past due. There Is a for
tune and luxury for many in the poul
try business in this valley as many
will attest though the number of wit
nesses are not as great as might be
the case. Following the organization
here next week, the hen and hen pro
ducts will be elevated as a community
enterprise, the same as has the dairy
and the hog industry has been of late
years.

The west is generally as much in
terested in the world's baseball series
as are the easteners. The Observer's
prompt account of each day's game is
highly appreciated by baseball read
ers. Two days rest and then we can make
the harvest festival a rousing success.
