ter's supply of sauerkraut The cab
bage crop is Just coming in and hun
dreds of fine heads . are bursting with
fatness and must be used at once or
spoil. For kraut making . purposes
these bursted heads are as good as
any. could be.
All lovers of the Dutch mixture
are getting busy with their brine
barrels and spades. Cabbage is now
selling for $1 per hundred. Some
gardners. however, are selling off
bursted heads, which must be used at
once, for 75 cents per hundred.

Now that the variagated autumn
leaves are falling shade tree pruning
time is again at hand, and many of
La Grande's fine rows of box elders
are feeling the clip of the pruning
hook. Experts at the pruning busi
ness say that October and November
are the best months for pruning
shade trees, but June and July arc
good. Care must ba taken, however,
in the spring to avoid cutting the
trees too soon for in March, April or
May the sap is flowing so freely th;it
to cut the branches would caus.

La Grande shade trees state that the
oldest trees in the city are box elders.
The most numerous also are of this
hardy variety. Silver leaf poplar
seems to be next in favor, especially
among the more recent planters. Ash
and maple are also found in the city
