EXTREMELY
(OMKAl
Uproarious In the extreme was the
large audience at the Steward theatre
last night, when Alburtus, the hyp
notist, took a class of ten young men
through a series of stunts in which
the comic possibilities of the human
frame were proven unlimited. Chorus
dancing, flailing in the Grande Ronde
river, blowing out the footlights, play
ing the Pendleton band, and squawk
ing desperately over the. nursing bot
tle, were some of the antics perform
ed by the young men at the will of
Alburtus.
OC more lasting Interest locally per
haps, was the Bhort performance of
Arzuelia, ''The Maid of Mystery." The
manager of the company announced
before waking the girl that she was
raised In Seattle, where she was dis
covered by a teacher, who found her
frequently answering questions be
fore they were asked.
Some of the most mysterious acts
of the girl prodigy might be mention
ed the Identification both by name and
occupation of several persons in the
au fence, who wrote questions on
slip3 of paper and handed them in to
Alburtus. In answer to a question
from Wayne Pickler, the girl said
La Grande would win the Baker foot
ball game 6 0. That La Grande will
have 20,000 people in 11 years and that
Lou Hayburn will be the next Chief
of Police .were other future evenU
told by Arzuelia.
BOr S THUMB
SEVERED
diaries Huulock, 13-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. "Doc" Hunlock, met
with an extremely painful accident
late yesterday evening which necessi
tated his being taken to the hospital.
His left thumb was severed with an
ax while chopping wood for a neigh
bor in Kast La Grande. A misaimed
blow caught the thumb squarely and
excepting for a thin piece of cuticle,
the member was completely severed
from the hand. Doctor Richardson
was called to dress the wound, and
though still in pain of an excruciating
nature, the boy has some hopes of
retaining his thumb. Doctor Rich
ardson has sewed the thumb back to
the hand, but in view of the fact that
the amputation was so complete, it is
doubtful it' the operation will prove
successful.
Congo Libel Trial Hcgini.
LKOI'OLDVILLK. Belgian, Congo,
Sept. 21. Two American missionaries,
riev. William Morrison and Rev. W.
II. Sheppard, were placed on trial
here today on chraes of libel, brought
by one of the Congo concession com
panies which had a monopoly of rub
ber gathering In the Kasai region.
Messrs. Morrison and Sheppard ar
rived here a few weeks ago with wit
nesses who will testify In their be
half. The 'witnesses were secured
with greatest difficulty because of the
long distance to be traveled in reach
ing Leopoldviile. . M. Vandervede, the
Belgian Socialist, is attorney for the
missionaries. The plaintiff company
claims $20,000 damages from each of
the men for "calumnious denuncia
tion." The circumstances are such
that th- s'i't is considered practically
as brought by the Belgian government
against the missionaries.

Why Drugfrlsts Recommend Cham,
berlalu'a Colic, Cholera And
Diarrhoea Remedy.
Mr. Frank C. Hanrahan, a prominent
druggist of Portsmouth, Va., Bays:
"For the past six years I have sold
and recommended Chamberlain's Col
ic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. It
is a great remedy and one of the best
patent medicines on the market. I
handle some others for the same pur
poses that pay me a larger profit, but
this remedy Is sure to effect a cure,
and my customer so certain to ap
preciate my recommending It to him,
that I give It the preference." For
