Al Stephens left this morning for
Camp Carson with a large crew of
men and teams to convey supplies to
the mines up the river. He succeeded
in outfitting for the trip yesterday af
ternoon. So difficult was his task that
at one .time he considered seriously of
going to North Powder, from which
place he thought It would be easier
for him to get transportation. When
the outfit started this morning they
figured on reaching the camp tomor
row night.
Mr. Stephens has secured the old
Carson mine, whose banks and bars
for years have been known to contain
the root of all evil In paying quanti
ties and company after company have
been organized and thousands of dol
lars have been spent on this proper
ty. The gold is there but being im
bedded in what is termed a cement
formation which practically refuses ot
dissolve in the sluice boxes the gold
is carried In. Mr. Stephens Is asso-
r!?.t?d v;lth several Fuiliauu capital
ists and they are going to install a
large 100-ton mill which will bring up
the pay dirt and gravel. Those who
have been in close touch with this
valuable property for many years
firmly believe this system will result
In "Old Carson" yielding up her
wealth. The mill will arrive within
the next 30 days, if not sooner.

The prospects for the lecture course
that the Rev. Ford Ellis has been in
terested In bringing to the city are
now very bright, as a large number
of season tickets have been sold. How
ever, there are still fifty tickets to be
disposed of before the announcement
can postively be made that the course
will be given. It is earnestly hoped
by ail who are interested in having
a lecture course of this character
in the city thut the necessary amount
of tickets may be sold.
Tickets may cow be obtained by
phoning to the Rev. Ford Ellis, whose
phone number Is Main 67.
La Follette Is tho first number ot
the course to appear in La Grande,
many have expressed the thought that
the privilege of hearing this "Whip of
the Senate" is alone worth the price
of the entire course. But there are
four other numbers, each of decided
value. Lybarger will come second
with a lecture entitled, "Land, Labor,
and Wealth," a subject In which the
people of this city are deeply Interest
ed. Edward Elliott will next give an
evening's reading of some of his mas
terful dramatic scenes, while fourth
on the list the man of mystery, Lau-
rant, the magician, will come with
his tour assistants. Lastly ten col-
lego singing girls will fittingly close
the course lu song.
Miss Grace Boner ,the agent of the
lecture bureau, who for some days has
very successfully carried on the ticket
campaign in the city, left yesterday
for Baker City, where she will com
plete the arrangements for a $1,000
lecture course to be given there. She
will then go to Pendleton, where the
same course is to be given that the
people of La Grande are to enjoy.

POOR FARM
Yesterday afternoon at the home of
Mrs. Ed Kiddle of Island City, twenty
three pounds of carpet rags were tack
ed by a number of ladies who were
invited by Mesdames Kiddle, Bldwell,
and Hunter to assist in making rugs
for county poor farm. Not long ago
Mrs. Kiddle and Mrs. Bldwell visited
the poor farm, and found that while
the seven inmates were well taken
care of by the county there was one
thing that might be done to add to
their comfort. The floors of the rooms
were painted, but the visitors decid
ed that the addition of a small
rug in each room would be welcome
to the old men whom fortune has left
homeless in their declining years. At
once and the promoters ar
ranged for a tacking bee in order to
get the rags necessary for making
the rugs. It was asked that each lady
bring enough rags to make a pound
when tacked. Each guest brought
more, however .the result beiner that
sixteen ladles had a nice assortment
of balls weighing 23 pounds at the
close of the pleasant afternoon. The
hostesses served Ice cream and coffee.
There will be another rag tacking in
three weeks at the home of Mrs. Fred
Kiddle. It is desired that enough
rags may be tacked to make rugs for
ten rooms, as more inmates are ex
pected soon at the farm.
