J. D. McKcnnon, chairman of the
committee on judges for the Union
County Exposition, received a letter
from Prof. James Withycombe of the
Oregon Agricultural college stating
that the college would be able to send
judges to La Grande and sent the
names of Pro. E. L. Potter for the
livestock exhibits, Prof. G. It. Hyslop
for the grains and grasses, and Mrs.
Hyslop for the domestic art.
Prof. Withycombe stated that he
would be unable to be present him
self as he had engagements taking
him out of the state at the time of
the fair. The most competent man of
the faculty which means the best In
the state In their lines will come to
La Grande to act as Judges.

With the addition of three special
agents of the general land o.Hee, who
have been delegated to abstract the
records of homesteads and timber
claims in the land office for six years
back, and the four persons delegated
to the local land office for special
work by the district forester at Port
land, the iocal office is crowded to
it3 capacity. The special ! gents of
the general land office are II. E.
Laughlin, William K. West, L. R.
Mason. They are working under the
direction of Chief of Field Agents An
drew Christensen of Portland.
In addition to the special agents,
the district forester at Portland has
delegated four persona, two stated
clerks and two forest rangers to take
the status of all entries in the La
Grande land office, which are includ
ed in forest reserves. Including the
register and receiver, the regular
force at the local office is five, but
at the present time twelve are find
ing quarters there.
The for' o at the office are greatly
inconvenienced by the additional
agents and clerks, but the officials
are glad to have the visitors as they
are saving the work that might have
been demanded of them. Chief Clerk
Carpy has been taking a vacation for
several days, but will return to his
work Monday. Since Receiver Eber
hard has been at the local office the
custom has been followed out for the
other clerks and officers to do extra
work when one of the force Is away.
