La Grande is now a matter of fact.
uad with the death of this class of
baseball, becomes evident a very cer
tain truth that baseball hereafter must
be of a different class and kind than
has been seen here this summer. The
games Been in La Grande this sum
mer, with three or four exceptions,
were not of a kind that will create
support next year. Last season's
classy club spoiled further mediocre
stuff. Manager Lincoln is not to
blame, it Is simply a matter ot con
ditions as they exist. With no or
ganization behind the club, the games
were played in a listless manner usu
ally. The same thing was. true all
over Eastern Oregon, and it is a aafe
bet that hereafter class D baseball
will exist in this section of the coun
cil 11 tC" ! try with possibly a portion of Idaho
connected with it.
Already Boise promoters are writ-
pects of next year's league, stating
that they got all the class C ball they
wanted last year. The latter class is
too expensive, an affair for Boise, con
sequently for La Grande too. . With
such a fact demonstrated so early
this year, it resolves Itself on L-
Grande and other eastern towns to
drop down a peg and take class D ba'l.
There are members of the locai
team here this summer who would
stand easy chances of playing on a
professional club here next summer,
a fact that will make fast ball doubly
Interesting.
With the unsuccessful attempt to
put on good amateur ball this year,
local fans have learned a lesson and
aext year will clamor for the better
3rade, and no doubt back it with good
-ash, namely class D ball. During the
omlng winter months, the identity r,t
ie league will be worked out.

HI GH McCALL. Rec. Secy
With one week of 1909 football writ
ten on history's pages, prospects are
j assuming a hue that will be pleasing
to the follower's of the great game in
I La Grande this year. Run as the
i squad is, on a basis where high stand
ards in academic work is more neces
sary than profflelency on the gridiron
objective parents are withdrawing
their "nay nays" to the game. Know
ing that the studies must be up to
a high standard, the students are ap
plying themselves lustily to their
books that their chances with the
moleskins may not be curtained by a
shortage In tschool brainmatter. With
this condition in the schools it is no
wonder that the splendid progress,
so noticeable, is res tltant. The squad
i its entirety this week is in bettet
shape than it was at the end of the
third week last year; fast, active, and
well organized.
There is a mint of material, or rath
er will be after Monday, and a week
from Monday. The men to come in
next week are invariably heavy, heav
ier than the avearge seen in La
Grande, The men are Milan of Jo
seph, a 190 pounder, Tom Williamson
of this city, another 190 pounder, the
two Beans, Heidenrlch, all three fa
miliar and efficient men, "Jimmie"
rwin, the crack quarter from Island
CityFrank Millering, a lineman of
this city, and one or two others.
When these men register for prac
tice, about the appended squad will
be on hand; Milan and Williamson,
Heidenrlch, Meyers, Cecil Bolton, and
others will likely be the men from
whom the full and fvo half back po
sitions will be chosen, unless Chll
ders enters school which will create
some difference. These men will have
at the helm, likely, Irwin with Grady
to chiefly help him. Irwin has the
greater weight, while Grady is at
present shouting signals in a man
ner that will make Irwin do his best.
The erd positions are swarming
with applicants. Virgil Bolton, the
veteran end, Ex-Captain Meyers, Rice,
Lotles, Crawley, George Currey and
Ray Williams are out after the two
positions on which so much depends
in modern football.
At tackles, Captain Ingle seems to
have a lease on his job for his bulk,
experience and ability will help him
hold the place to Instill his men on
the field. A. Bean, Millering and II.
Stein, seems the most likely team
mates.
At guards there is another big bunch
of candidates. Heidenrlch is coming
back and he will vary his efforts be
tween full" and guard. Grout, Bly
stone and Bohnenkamp are at, pres
unt the men who have the necessary
beef to place that responsible position.
Hean is ccrofng back to do the center
rush stunt, where at he shown so
irillantly last year. "Slats" Woods of
"ormer fame will be opposite Bean for
'he pivotable point.
With this long list to choose from,
ompetition will.be so keen that the
rreafest good will result.. Others
etting in shape to. cut considerable
gures are Russell, Ralston and Pld
ock, after end and quarter positions.
