JEWS CELEBRATE SEW YEAR,
Rosh Hashonah, the Jewish New
Tear,. was celebrated by the 1,800,000
Jews throughout the country today.
In the Jewish calendar today is Tisrl
1 of the year 6C70, dating from the
creation of the world. ' The year Just
commenced is an embolistlc Imper
fect year of 383 days. The ordinary
perfect year of the Jews as 355 days.
In this city, the large Jewish popu
lation observed the day as never be
fore. More than half the business
houses along Broadway, from Four
teenth street to Chambers, were clos
ed and the east side was as tight as a
drum.
It was declared .bat the day was
never more closely observed than
this year, and particularly so by the
younger generation, , which pleased
parents, .
One of the great features during
the services was the blowing of the
Bhofar, which calls to repentance; its
blasts appealing to the angels to In
tercede with the Almighty for those
who have sinned.
Today's observance marks the be
ginning of the ten penitential days,
the last of which, Yom Kippur or the
Day of Atonement, comes this year
on Saturday September 25.
In all the orthodox synagogues of
the country services will be held each
morning of these ten days. An all day
service, with fasting and prayer, will
ttark.Yoin Kippur. '
J As the term Implies, the Peniten
tial 'season Is one In which the good
Jew ! given an opportunity "under the
teaching of his religion to make an
enumerated confession of his sins,
and pray the forglvetss of the Eter
nal. If during that time he overlooks
any sin which he committed in the !
year Just ended, he has an opportunl-'
ty on the last, or Day of Atonement

By fasting tad excluding all earthly
thought, the believer devotes his
whole mind to a review of bis year's
work, and profound contemplation of
the Eternal. He confesses all the
small mistakes, forgotten, perhaps in
the recollection of graver wrong do
ing,, and invokes Divine forgiveness.
The service continues all day. ' It
is very beautiful and characterized by
many symbolic passages. It Is to the
believer one of the most significant
and Important events of the religious
calendar, and Is observed generally
by those of the Jewish faith.
Next to the Christian New ",zt.
that of the Hebrews is the most gen
erally observed in New York. It is
one of the boasts of the city that it
has more Jews than Palestine, and
while a majority of them, perhaps,
have drifted away from the orthodox
faith of their fathers, practically all
Join In the New Year observance.
Other New Years which will be
extensively observed in this cosmo
politan city are those of the Greek
and Hussion church, which comes on
January 14 next, and the Mohamme
dan New Year, 1328, which falls on
January 13 next..

The Pacific coast has set a pace for
out precedent. The Lewis & Clark ex
position paid all expenses and a divi
dend to the stockholders. The Alaska-Yukon-Paclhc
exposition has already
paid an amount sufficient to pay the
running expenses for the entire period
and has six weeks to go on. The Buf
falo, Chicago, St. Louis and James
town expositions were all run at a
financial loss.
A movement is on foot In Southern
California to have the state divided.
The geographical conditions are such
that it would appear that convenience
and economy would favor such action.
The lower portion, if the suggestion
now being made is followed, will be
designated as South California. This
sounds rather harsh, but like South
Carolina and South Dakota it would
soon become harmonized.

This has been a year of special
rates to the Pacific coast The spring
colonist rates began in April, then
followed the Seattle fair rates, and
now the fall home seekers rates are
on again. The railroads are doing
their part in securing the population
that is needed bo much In this land
of golden opportunity.

Footwea ris our exclusive business. All of our en
ergies and years of experience is centered in this one
line. We are not satisfied simply to make a sale. "We
want to fit your feet. You want your children's feet
properly fitted. Many a boy and girl has lagged be
hind in their studies, if the truth were known, sim
ply because their feet were not properly fitted at the
beginning of the school year. It costs you no more to
secure the special attention we bestow than it does
elsewhere, in fact, buying as we do direct from the
manufacturers, we can save you money.
