SEW GERMAN COMPASS. '
A new compass has been adopted
by the German government ' for Its
warships. A nine-pound wheel mount
ed In a holder of quicksilver Is made
to rotate at Use rate of 21,000 revolu
tions a minute .by an electric motor.
After running for two hours the wheel
Is set In'the direction of the mathe
matical meridian, which direction it
maintains. The advantage o( the new
compass Is that it is entirely unaffect
ed by neighboring iron or steel, or
by vibrations and rolling of the ves
sel. A compass .card attached Indica
tes direction in th'e usual way.
Anna Ileld's Gown of Dlunm:-.
' Kansas City Starr Miss Anna Meld
arrived from Europe yesterday wlta
her dress of diamonds. Much to the
disappointment of the assemblage at
the North German Lloyd pier, she was
not using it as a traveling costume,
however. She even admitted that it
wasn't all of diamonds. There Is some
pinJc silk, too to hang th& diamonds
on. But there are as many diamonds
on ehe dress Miss Held said so her
self as there are beads on a Jet gown
which is undoubtedly some diamonds.
Miss Held didn't bring home Will
her the million dollars which it is
was said she had when she weu
away last spring. Maybe the diamond
dress explains that.
She said Bhe had traveled all over
Europe in a motor car In the summer,
that she was very well, that she would
appear again very soon in "Miss In
nocence," and that it was not any
wiser for young, girls to go on the
stage now than it was when she weut
away. Several of the present theat
rical organiatlons, according, to MIsj
Held, are not run for the sole pur
pose of attaining real artistic resulr

Since the worth of paved streets
has been demonstrated beyond the
peradventure of a doubt, the advisa
bility of a continuance of the good
work Is being favorably discussed on

are anxious that Jackson street's pav

point opposite the high school, and
from Main west to the county bridge

those who want Douglas paved east
