Suffering Intense pain from injur
ies received from a switch engine,
hurling him . quite a distance while
he was walking along the track, a
man by the name of Nash, a deaf
and dumb mute, was taken to the
Blue Mountain house yesterday af
ternoon about five o'clock. As far
as could be learned from him he
was walking along the track and an
engine came up behind him and not
being able to hear it, he was hurldd
some distance and received severe
bruises and cuts on the head and
body- Dr. Upton was called and
treated the injuries and today, al
though not out of pain, is some
what better and on the road to re
covery. '

A Big Week.
One of the largest Monday night
houses ever in attendance at the
Pastime, was out last night to see
the second performance of the pow
erful drama, "From Sire to Son."
As on Its first presentation the play
gave the best of satisfaction. Mr.
Harrison and Miss Natino were both
deservedly applauded in the leading
roles, and the supporting cast was
al lthat could be expected or desired.
Mr. Routh does some great work as
"Jonas." The dramatic situation In
the old tower during the last act
Is one of the strong features of the
play. With "Down On The Farm"
fololwlnn for the last half of the
! week promises to be one of the larg
est the house has ever had.

Vicious Pinto Comes Jiear Seriously
Injuring; Officer Black.
Poundmaster Joe Black escaped ser
ious Injury this morning in a lucky
fashion when a spirited and ugly pinto
which he attempted to capture after
It had broke loose from its moorings
on Washington avenue. The beast
tantalized the whole police department
and a few others, but was finally
roned by Officer Black. When he had
hove in the Black and got his hand on
the beast's bridle, that animal com
menced a system of sparring and coun
ter attack which luckily did but little
damage to Mr. Black. The pinto
reared up like the coon Johnson and
struck with his fore parts so lively
and with such force that had he aimed
his blows more true Mr. Black would
have taken the count for sure. After
due care and patience Mr. Horse was
snubbed to a tree and awaited his
owner who got away without trouble.
The animal was extremely vicious. ,

Trap Bats at Seattle. .
SEATTLE, Sept. 1(. Giant rat
tiupa, extending two miles alont
the water front to catch rats infest
ing the wharfs, will be installed by
the city department to heal the sani
tation according to plans today. This
plan is more economical than than
the smal ltraps. The traps will have
pitfalls at intervals, so the rats will
drop into the trap.

Man of Mnety-Seven Tears Takes
Long Trip in Automobile.
Ninety-seven years of age, yet able
to- ride from Pendleton to Wallowa
and back to La Grande en route to
Pendleton again. Is the remarkable
record of Mr. Blakeley of Pendleton,
who with his escorts left this morning
for Pendleton after spending the night
here. , The trip waa made with tor.
and Mr 8. Sam Thompson, formerly of
this city, but now of Pendleton, who
drove to Wallowa from Pendleton in a
1910 Franklin. Mr. Blakeley, a grand
father of Mrs. Thompson made the
trip with them. He is 97 and the only
effect the trip has had on him thus
far was to make him fret last night
because the trip yesterday did not con
tinue to Meacham without stopping.
He was persuaded to reBt in this city
however. The party left this morning
at 7 o'clock on the last lap of their
journey .
