The bicycle which was stolen a short
time ago from Recorder I. R. Snook,
was found last evening by one of Mr.
Snook's neighbors. It is presumed
that the thief was frightened and re
turned the wheel.
A. D. Thomson, who was at one
time advertising manager for the F.air
store, and Mrs. Plerson Thomson,
who is also known here, having been
employed in the People's store, left
for Elgin this morning after spend
ing yesterday here. They are both
inrnted at Graneeville. Wash., and
Q have been sent to Elgin to engineer a
big sale in a clothing store tnere.
John Powell, of Wallowa, spent
last night in La Grande.
AV. F. Fuller, of Baker City, was a
La Grande visitor last night
Dr. W. B. McMillan, who was called
to Portland a short time ago on the
account of the death of his brother,
returned home this morning.

entertainment, Mrs. Ferguson served
Ice cream and cake. Miss Mary Be
dan, of Joseph, who is visiting Miss
Gertrude, was the guest of honor. It
was an evening of enjoyment for all

games and various other amusements
occupied the attention of the guests.
Trying to Remove Major.
MARENGO, Iowa, Aug. 17. The
trial of Mayor Henderson, whom the

today. The court room is crowded,
and feeling are intense. Henderson
doesn't deny drinking a little, and
said that the people knew It when
they elected him.

SALT LAKE. Aug. 17. Jack John
son, the Negro puglist appeared at the
police headquarters complaining that
hotels of this city refused to admit
him. He asked the police to aid him
in search for a room. When they de
clined he left In a rage. It Is unknown
where he spent last night.

Parents to Institute Systematic Search
For Their Son.
Absent from home since July, 1908,
and not heard from for eight months,
the whereabouts of Guy E. Garn, 22-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E.
Garn of Imbler, has become a mystery
and the parents and friends of the
young man are much alarmed about
his condition. About eight months
ago, the family heard from Guy at
San Bernardino, Cal., where he had
arrived after a tour of Montana, Col
orado and other states In the Union.
At that time, the Atlantic fleet was
cruising along the coast and it is pos
sible that he may have enlisted. The
parents scout this theory, but are go
ing to write to the navy department
notwithstanding.
That he may have come to grief in
the southland, is the more plausible
solution of the problem, but In any
rate, the family is much alarmed. Mr.
Garn was in La Grande today taking
steps for a systematic search for his
son, and any aid that might be given
him will be greatly appreciated. He
13 a young man, with curly hair and
fair complexion.

A very miraculous escape front
death or serious Injury occurred this
afternoon when the team of Earl Jones
became frightened and ran away
from where they were standing in
front of the creamery.. Mr. Jones and
his little 4-year-old son drove up to
the creamery and the father got out
of the wagon taking the boy with him.
Mr. Jones then went into the cream
ery leaving the little boy outside. The
father was some time in coming out
and the boy getting Impatient ciuubeu
back into -the wagon and the team,
becoming slightly frightened started
to move on and then turned around,
finding that there was no one hold
