Resolution of condolence, 6c a line
The Commercial club at its meet
lag last evening, in voting that a com
mlttee be appointed to look into the
matter of freight rates for this city
on the lines that Spokane is striving
to secure, is certainly timely. If Spo-
Is La Grande, and how the powers
that be can Justify a decision that
will compell the interior points to pay
more than designated terminals when
they are several hundred miles Ipbb
haul, remain to be solved. It will be
solved and that Is it will cost no more
to land freight in La Grande from the
eaot th.ui it does to haul it 300 miles
further. Now is. the time to assist
in bringing about this change and
without a doubt our Commercial club
will take care of this matter. -.

William E. Curtiss, the special cor
respondent for the Chicago Record-
Herald, who yesterday went to Wal
Iowa county as stated In the Observer,
to secure data to produce a general
descriptive writeup of Eastern Oregon
arrived here this afternoon In com
pany with Gen. Pas. Agent Win. Mc-
Murray and Traveling Passenger
Agent J. II. O'Neal. He will remain
here several hours, visiting the mill
and beet fields, and conferring with
local irrlgatlonists, all of which will
be inoculated in his writeup. His
visit is worth more to the county's ex
ploitation, than any of recent months.
In a brief interview today Mr. Cur
tiss fairly exploded with compliments
of Wallowa and Union counties. The
Switzerland-like effect of the moun
tains about Wallowa lake and scenery
into Wallowa and the verdor of the
country in general, appealed to him
to a degree he can best express whe.i
he writes the two or three pages for
