A. J. Webb has opened a cosy lunch
counter on the corner of the O'Con
nel cigar store, and when completed
will be all enameled white, making it
one of the neatest places on the road
for passengers to get a cup of coffee
and a sandwich.
Capt and Mrs. A. M. Paul left this
morning for Salt Lake, to attend the
meeting of the Indian War veteranB,'
which' is held in conjunction with the
National encampment of the G. A.
R. Capt. Paul was commander of
the post in Salt Lake City four years.
Mrs. Buhl and son Harry are ex
pected to arrive tonight from Seattle,
where the have visited the fair, to
be guests for a few days with Mr.
and Mrs. F. H. Green. They are
from Minnesota, Illinois, and are now
on their way home.
Richard Palferyman of Springfield,
Utah, is here looking after the chan
ces of securing a contract for the dig
ging of the canal for the Grande
Konde Irrigation company. He has
on outfit ready for shipment. At the
present time he has a large contract
on the Denver railroad.
Frances C. Hews, of Denver, Colo
rado, will lecture Monday evening at
8:15 at the K. of P. hall. Her subject.
"The New Era." Miss Hews is a
teacher of the modern psychology and

will remain for several days yet.
J. D. Carroll of Union, who has been
visiting his daughter - Mrs. Robert
Lloyd, has returned home.
Mr. and Irs. T. C. Riddle return
ed this afternoon from Rondowa,
where they have been outing for sev
eral days. ' "
A. F. Sheets of Joseph, who was
formerly one of the pioneer city treas
urers of La Grande, came in this' af
ternoon. Jack Clarke, who is employed at
Palmer Junction, came in this after
noon and will spend Sunday with
friends.
Geo. B. Stoddard, C. P. Ferrin, J.
W. Black and their families, who have
been outing at Joseph for the past
10 days, have returned. Some came
Mrs. C. M. Humphrey and Miss
Alice Snook left last night for Spirit
Lake, Idaho, where the husband of
the former is employed on a railroad.
Mrs. Humphrey will make her home
there, while Miss Snook will return
as soon as her vacation time is over
to resume her work in the posloffice.

Railroad Circles
Rumors afloat in railroad circles for S
the past few weeks relative to changes !
and prolomotions of high officials re
ceived added impetus today when
General Superintendent M. J. Back
ley and Superintendent Buckley have
spent an entire day conferring with
local officials on matters not made
public. That Chief Dispatcher A.
Buckley Is to be promoted to the new
Portland-Seattle road with headquar
ters In Portland or Seattle, where he
will act In the same capacity as he Is
here, now seems assured, Judging
from indications and rumors preced
ing them.
Coupled with the talk of Buckley's
promotion Is another rumor that J. J.
Corbett. for several years night chief
here, but more recently employed by
the O. R. Is, at Spokane, will return
to La Grande to assume chiefship
here.
It Is believed definite announcement
of this change will be made in a few
days.
