'fill PROW ISSUED
AT UH10H THIS WEEK
NOT PARI IZAN BUT WILL PROMOTE THE
WELFARE OF CITY'S MORALS
The Mew Paper Will be Issued Twice a
Week Hereafter
"Tho Union Progress." a senil
weekly publication, was this morning
added to Union's newpaper directory.
The periodical is a four-page affair
and the first issue Is void of ads. The
reading maiter is blended with Un
ion news items and unraslcal, but
sharp, comments on the political,
conditions of Union. According to
the "curtain riser" published in the
editorial department, It Is not a po
litical sheet In the sense of having
party affiliations, but is to be de
voted to the progress of Union's wel
fare. Editorially, the first Issue says:
The Union Progress makes
its initial bow to the general
public of Union and vicinity
for the first time in this is
sue. It's columns will be
devoted to the cause of mu
nicipal reform and civic
righteousness. In politics
it is independent and stands
for the man and not the par
ty. First and foremost, we
will advocate the protection
of the home and the young
and rising generation.
Whatever strikes the
home undermines the very
foundation and principles
of all government. Then let
our first care be for the
home and the young peo
ple. Municipal ownership of
all public utilities and fran
chises. The success of
municipal ownership has
been demonstrated to the
people in Union in the large
revenue derived from the
water system of our little
city. Even the strongest
opponents of the proposed
electric lighting system
publicly acknowledge this.
Political corruptness and
rottenness will be exposed
at any and all times, none
such offenders will receive
any mercy be they friends
or foes. The columns of
this paper are open at all
times to all people for the
discussion of the municipal
affairs of the city, and for
all legitimate enterprises
and efforts to build up a
bigger and a better Union.
We intend to make this a
semi-weekly publication
and believe that the enter
prising and progressive
people of this city will be
clad of the innovation. We
shall boost for Union first,
last and all the time, be
cause there is no place like
it on the face of the earth,
that has been blessed with
more natural advantages
than this beautiful city of
ours. It is simply a ques
tion of taking advantage of
these things provided by
nature, and we need more
reoi)le to help us along
these lines. We shall dis
tribute sample copies of
this and several succeeding
issues freely and trust you
will read them carefully,

the town by pen or by tongue; Those
women you say are not very young;
Those old meddlesome women.
Let me ask you some questions, and
answer them fair; Then say if you've
given a deal that Is square; If you've
done unto them as you'd have them
do to you. If they were in your place,
and you in the shoes of these "dread
ful" old women.
Who goes to your home when your
wife cannot see? Looks after the
house and the child at her knee? Who
cares for your dying? Who lays out
your dead, sends flowers for your cof
fin, dries tears that are shed? Its
some of those women.
Who plotted the grave yard you ac
knowledge is neat? Who rustled the
hose to water its streets? Raises
funds for its sexton, looks out for
repairs, while you let them do it, and
lend them your "prayers?" "Woodle
headed" old women.
For whom do you business men
keep your supplies? Alone for the
men whom you think are so wiue?
Me thinks your Income would not be
so high, were it not for the things
that the children must buy; And
those "gabby" old women.
Who furnished the flag, which so
proudly did wave o'er our school house
to honor the heroes so brave; Who
furnished the girls for the liberty car,
the "angles" the band boys, the rest
room, the choir? T'was some " horrid
old women.
Who was burlesqued the Fourth in
your ugly parade. Bears your ridi
cule then; Bears your ridicule now.
Who raises the boys for your piggeries,
blind; And you say the police has
no business to mind the request of a
woman.
All we ask for is justice, and cour
tesy too; If you are honest, great
hearted, fair minded and true, you'll
see that you owe the best things in
your lives to the love of your mothers,
