THE DALLES, Aug. 5. A pig under
the bed in which the mother and two
children were asleep with all their
clothing on, chickens feathers, melon
rinds and dirt several inches thick on
the floor of the bed chamber which Is
also the living room, and dishes which
appeared to have been 'unwashed for
several 'months, are some of the dis
gusting conditions of the Mark Collins
home near Tygh valley as the officers
found It early yesterday morning when
they visited the place for the purpose
of taking the four Collins children In
to custody and sending them to the
Boys and Girls' Aid society home in
Portland.
Sheriff Levi Chrlsman and Officer
J. G. Kilpack of the Portland institu
tion went to the Collins home a few
days ago to get the children, due to
the conditions of their home life It
being urged that they be placed In
the school In the Rose City. Mrs. Col
lins saw the officers approaching and
sent her children to hide in the hills.
She then proceeded to brandish a

' they called on her until she was over
powered and the knife taken away.
The officials decided to take the
woman unawares on their next trip.
The five men arrived at the Colllna
home about 3 o'clock yesterday morn
ing. Responding to their knocks at
the door, Mrs. Collins appeared and
was soon "tied up." sne was taaen
out on the porch where her arms were
placed about a pillar on the porch,
one on either side and then her hands
were secured with a pair of hand
cuffs. In this position she was unable
to cause trouble as she did when Sher
iff Chrlsman and Officer Kilpack first
visited her home, unless she pulled
the pillar down.
"Picture the most horrible place
and fllty conditions you can and mul
tiply it by two then you could not
really have a good idea of the disgust-
ing sight which met our eyes when we
went into the Collins home, saia
Sheriff Chrlsman today.
"We were greeted by a pig which
ran out from under the bed. This an
imal, from every appearauce, lives In
the house all the time. There were
chicken feathers strewn all around
the living and sleeping room, besides
melon rinds and dirt and rubbish of
all kinds, the stuff being several
Inches thick on the floor. Dishes were
on the table and I knew that they
had not been washed for six months.
There are only two rooms In the house
and the family and pig enjoy the
same accommodations."
Mrs. Collins made a strenuous 'hol
ler" when the officers took the child
ren, but the men were not affected by
her feelings in view of the fact that
the home life of the children has been
for its object the annexation of the
seaports of San Pedro and Wilming
ton. According to leading members of
the Chamber of Commerce, a tremen
dous development In the trade between
the United States and China is surely
Imminent, and the City of Angels de
sires to secure its share of this com
merce by acquiring a seaport
If the annexation movement car
ries, as now seems certain, ten mil
lion dollars will be expended In the
construction of commercial docks to
handle the great commerce that la ex
pected soon to pour in from the Em
pire of the Dragon. '
