PIERCE CROP AVERAGES 4S PER
Union County's Enormous Wheat Crop
Being Threshed.
Separation of the .wheat from the
chaff In Union county was commenc
ed with a vln today when several ma
chines, wheels were set In motion
In a small way threshing commences
Monday, but it remained for Wednes
day to mark the real opening of the
work.
Great Reports Early.
The first threshing of any real size
was that done on the Halley ranch
where Fred Gaskell's machine has
been at work. Fifty bushel of splen
did wheat to the acre Is the exact
average of his yield. Such reports
will be the rule all through threshing
time, for it Is admitted that crops
were never better on the whole than
this year. , ,
Further evidence of the estimate
made by the Observer some time ago
that the yield would top the million
mark, comes not alone In the cracker
Jack yield on the Halley ranch, but
Mr. Gaskell is today threshing the
Pierce crop on the Sandrldge where
the yield has so far produced be
tween 43 and 45 bushels per acre. ,
Such reports will give added inter
est to the outcome of, the crop this
year.
Other Machines Going:.
George MacDonald's machine is to
day Jhreshing grain on the Games
ranch near Imbler. The machine was
started yesterday In tentative fashion,
but today it is singing its song of
prosperity.
Brooks & Tuttle have their cooking
and camp outfits ready and will start
this afternoon or tomorrow at the lat
est. Headers at Work Too.
Fourteen headers in the vicinity of
Imbler and Alicel are knocking down
the bumper crops today as well.
Mill men, threshmen and all con
cerned are united in their estimates
that the yield will go the million bush
el mark, and if the period holds out
the way it has started, this will be
an underestimate, if anything.

POPE'S SIXTH ANN IVERSSARY
CUSEPPE S AUTO'S REIGN ONE OF
. MANY FEATURES.
Pope Tins . X. Completes Sixth Year
on Papal Throne. ; ,
KOA1K, Aug. 4. Today completed
the sixth year ot the reign of Gulseppe
Sarto (in English, Joseph Taylor) as
the Pope ot Rome. Showers of con
gratulations poured In upon the aged
head of the Catholic church, and the
College of Cardinals assembled and
presented a formal address of felici
tation. The various colleges of prel
ates also extended their greetings to
the Pope and all military and lay of
ficials of the Vatican appointed dele
gations to wait upon the Pope. Many
costly presents were received from the
faithful in many lands, as well as
more humble gifts from poorer ad
herents. The' offerings of the poor
were received with even greater Joy
by His Holiness than those of the
rich and powerful.
Pius X. is today the same affabH
democratic man that he was six years
ago, when suddenly raised from a pro
vincial bishop to the leadership of the
great church. Pomp and splendor
have not spoiled him and he retains
the same practical grasp of events in
the midst of the venerable and aw.?
inspiring surroundings of the Vatican.
The reign of Plus X. has not been
without sore trials and tribulations,
but they have not served to dampen
the almost youthful ardor with which
he entered into his duties six years
ago. The war against the religious
orders in France and the growth of
antt-clerlcal'OT throughout Europe he
looks upon c.3 evanescent obstacles
sent to try the tsmnor of the church.
ber of the New York state board of
