GULLING WAS ON ONE TRAIN SCENES EXTREMELY HORRIBLE HIS OWN ESCAPE WAS CLOSE AND DANGEROUS. HAS NOT SEEN LOCAL VICTIMS Wreck Worst Coming to His Knowl edge ot Railroading:. Conductor J. C. Gulling of this city has returned from Spokane, and that he is alive is due largely to good for tune which camped on his trail dur ing the horrible wreck at La Crosse, near Coeur d'Alene last Saturday evening. Mr. Gulling was riding in the street car train, and well up in front of the car which jammed into the motor train and Uy which 15 were killed and scores wounded. His fam ily and friends here were not aware that Mr. Gulling was in the Coeur d'Alene region at the time of the wreck, and have been at peace with their minds during the interim. In company with an old-time friend from Spokane Mr. Gulling was going out to the lakes on a street car train made up of new equipment. At the time of the crash, the two were sitting near the forward end of the car and the Impact was sufficient to throw Mr. Gulling over the seat at his front, and into the aisle. When he had righted himself and reached the open, what he describes as the most hor rible sight coming to his vision dur ing his long term of service in rail road work, greeted his eyes. For tunate for him, the greatest damage was done to the motor car, composed of poorer equipment. Gruesome Scenes Indeed. Some of the Incidents related by Mr. Gulling are truly awfully. He stated today, that in passing the de bris after the wreck, streams of hu man blood as large as small eardan hose would be seen oozing out of the cracks In the wreckage. One woman in the same car with Mr. Gulling, was struck in the cnest by a splinter. The board was about five inches wide, and penetrated the body directly over the heart. It did not stop in its death course until protruding a distance of several inches out of the back. Morgue-Like Silence. Contrary to general opinions, there were but few "scenes." As soon as the first crash was over, a pall of silence fell on the living and those who escaped uninjured, employes of a mill nearby had rushed to the scene and rescue work progressed for con siderable time very quietly and In morgue-like silence. The survivors were too horrified to speak. Mr. Gull'ng was not aware that Ed Thomas was on either of the trains, and learned, the fact only after EYQVITH ESS the Elgin men hurt in the MISS ROBERTS TO MARRY. Will Marry Her Leading Man. "If the time ever comes when Johnston wishes to become a candidate for pres ident, he could have saved h imself many votes by sending a telegram of regretts for his inability to attend. I don't believe that he could get any votes from those ha has disappointed." said Childberg.
