announcement from railroad bead-
quarters about the newly announced
fast train from Salt Lake to Portland,
said to be due about the first of next
month.
Little is known In La Crande about
the added train service, except that
it is evidently coming soon. Such
matters as to what the train will
carry, its running time and many oth
er interesting details, are not given
out for publication.
BAND AWAITS
There are several kinds
ot drilling but the kind
the kind that makes the
farm pay is the drilling
which makes water avail-
able. There is no need ;
of a dry farm. The task J
is not so 'great as you I
may think. I have had I
years of experience and I
understand the well busi- I
; ness thoroughly.

While the La Grande band is ta
king a much needed, though brief
rest. Manager bacon is in correspon
dence with the management of the
Intermountaln fair. at Boise, which
will conduct the band contest, to be
participated In by the local organi
zation. The management will pro
vide the music to be played during
the contest, and as there are many
other bits of Interesting details to
be announced, the band here awaits
with considerable interest, replies to
letters of Inquiries sent to the Boise
managment.

of Ordinance No. 423. Series 1909.
THE CITY OF LA GRANDE DOES
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
' Section 1. That Section 1 of Ordi
nance No. 423. Series 1909. be. and
the same is hereby amended so as
to read as follows:
Section 1. That all Opera houses,
theaters, churches. School houses,
public halls, lodge rooms, club rooms
and all other buildings used for pub
lic gatherings: all office baMiuj.s,
hotels, boarding houses and lodging
houses, shall have at least one front
on a public street, and shall have In
front suitable means of entrance and
exit; all outside doors in such build
ings shall be not less than four feet
wide, and Bhall open outwards; all
doors at the head of stairways shall
be ot the same width as the stair
ways and shall open outwards. Ex
its shall be provided in such build
ings on the second floor and on all
floors higher up. leading to stairs,
or ladders, built of iron or some other
fire-proof material, which shall at all
times be kept in good repair, and all
exits kept free from obstruction, and
in condition to furnish a safe descent
to the ground for the inmates of
such buildings. Over each ot such
exits there shall be on the inside the
word. "EXIT" painted in large let
ters, not less than six Inches high;
in no case shall there be less than
two such exits to each of such build
ings, one of which exits shall be on
one front, and one on a side of such
building fronting on a siret or ulv
And in case any such building is of
sufficient capacity to accommodate
100 persons, or more, there shall be
in such buildings at least three such
exits , placed as above described,
which shall be indicated by the word

fect,' on the 25th day of July, 1909,
after its approval by the Mayor, and
