The Oregon Railroad and Naviga
tion company has lust purchased a
large gravel pit near North Powder
and arrangements are now bring
made to follow the course outlined
by the head officials of that line sev
eral weeks ago relative to ballasting
the tracks from Huntington to Ba
ker City and possibly as far north
as North Powder. This has been a
season when the company did little
work on the road bed, presumably
because it had been decided to add
the gravel ballast.
It is stated that three gravel traiui
will soon be put on and that 200 men
will be employed In transferring ta-j
gravel from the North Powder beds
to points along the line.

BAKER CITY, July 26. The coron
ers Jury that sat yesterday after
noon in Durkee to determine In what
way John Hinds met his death re
turned a verdict to the effect that
Hinds was killed by a gun held in the
hand of Jake Howard. Howard was
brought to Iiaker City yesterday mor
ning by J. C. Coryell of Durkee and
lodged in the county jail.
The story of the tragedy in 'which
Hinds lost his life has been told In
numerous ways, but it seems some
credit is given to the statement that
there has been a difference between
the two men of long standing.
John Hinds and Jake Howard, had
been working In the mines and on
ranches in Baker county for a long
time. Both men had worked at dif
ferent times for Albert Hindman. Ac
cording to one report Howard made
remarks about the Hindman family
that were immediately refuted and
denied by Hinds, who was, when kill
ed in the employ of Mr. Hindman.
The scene of the final trouble was
In a saloon at Durkee and when
Hinds contradicted Howard's state
ments it is stated the latter drew his
gun and began to fire, hitting Hinds
three times in the breast. Claude
Hindman, who attempted to separate
the two men, received a bullet in
his hand and the amputation of one
finger will probably follow. After
the three shots had entered Hinds'
body he fell to the floor Instantly
and died within a few minutes. How
ard made no effort to escape and was
placed under guard until the next
morning when he was brought to
this city.
