This is Pioneer Day for Union
county. At Imblerwill gather several
. hundred who came here many yeaiB
ago, after long Journeys occupying
tnore than six months battling with
the elements as well as the Indians.
Just why many of these noble men
and women left all that was dear, to
cast their lot in a fur away country
is a matter that is difficult for the
present generation to logically figure
out, but impelled by that ever restless
pioneer adventurous spirit that has
prevailed as far as the records of his
tory chronicles, these early pioneers
Dot only saved "tliis laud from becom
ing a portion of Great Britain, but
paved the way for the thousands that
followed their blazed trail, to make
comfortable homes, build cities, and
make possible, our present day clvlll
tatfon. It is fitting that these early pioneers,
their descendants . and friends meet
annually to talk over the eventful
days of the building or the foundation
of this great commonwealth.

.program was late In getting started.
When the extraordinary large crowd
from La Grande arrived, waiting auto
mobiles and! carriages whisked the
guests to' the Bingham grove a half
mile away where lunches were served,
to the merry melodies of the Elgin
band. Imbler liberality flowed unre
stricted, and comments were heard on
very side for the smooth and ma
chine like precision which the big
gathering was moved and entertained.
The crowd is ' much greater than
usual, thanks to La Grande, which sent
fJarly 200 alone.
Columns would be required to depict
and picture the scenes on every hand.
Trail blazers from remote corners

Arrival was delayed from west and
: east tnds of the county due to the
fact that Elgin's large delegation v;is
, without means of transportation and
i the O. It. & N." condescendingly per
mitted a special train from there.
The Joseph train crew ran to El
gin bringing that crowd to Imbler and
then came to La Grande to make up
the regular Joseph train. It was 10:40
when the train left La Grande.
The thousand mark has been reach
ed but once lo the history of the as-
sociation and the

dance. Imbler has seldom if ever bad
a larger concourse than today.
Imbler and Elgin ball teams played
during the afternoon, giving variety
to the program.
