Subpoenas For Witnesses Before Jury
Hare Ben Served.
More than two score subpoenas have
been issued for witnesses before the
grand jury, called to meet tomorrow.
The call to the jurors was made about
a week ago, but the fact was not gen
erally known until nearly all the sub
poenas had been served. Among those
who are naturally interested in the do
ings of the grand jury there is much
speculation as to the specific purpose
of the session.
Among the cases to be investigated
la that of Ellott, the man accused of
robbing the Casey store at Hilgard a
short time ago. Whether or not the
authorities will make any move to stop
the alleged sale of liquor remains to
be seen. , , ' -' ,
With only a few known cases 'to
come up, it is not unlikely that sur
prises will be sprung during the sit
ting of the jury. To outward appear

the Irish lace maker was acquitted
last night on the charge of stealing
late from her employer. She will now
be sent home to Ireland, according to
an announcement made today by her
attorney. , ,
She turned down an offer to go up

ONTARIO, Oregon, July 20. Secre
tary Balllnger of the Interior depart
ment, will arrive here on July 24 to
inspect the Malheur project. His chief
object is to sound the sentiment of
land owners toward the government
aid in building of irrigation systems.
People north from Arcadia, including
the vicinities of Ontario, vaie ana

ject, while those living in the vicinity
of Nyssa and the Owyhee, favor a high
line ditch company.'
Because of the intense feeling, it
is suggested if the government decides
to take up the Malheur project, all
land south of Arcadia including the
Owyhee and Nyssa sections, be left
out. This seems to be the only feas
ible way of adjusting the matter, as
land owners north of Arcadia will not
sign their land with a high line com
pany, even if the government should

City Water Project AHxumes Encour

Over three mileB of steel pipe to be
used in points in the pipe line from
the intake at Beaver Creek to the res
ervoir in La Grande, have been or
dered by the construction officials
who are to build the municipal water
pit-.i here. Such is the ne'i ineiv
here by the city officials.
The last two miles, including the
1300 foot drop to the reservoir will
be all steel pipe, but at points where
the pressure is not so great wood pipe
will be adopted. The wood pipe is to
be cut from logs along the pipe line.
It is only in precipitous gulches
and canyons where the pressure will
be Immense, that the steel is resorted
to. '
Delivery of pipes can be made in 30
days, judging from quotations received
by Engineer PWkler, but while .the
shipment is coming from the east,
there are a multitude of affairs to be
attended to on the ground, and today
it is apparent, in municipal circles,
that actual work will start in less
than 10 days.

held is planned for the near future by
the government, which will dispose of
550.000,000 feet of yellow pine near
Cass Lake in Northwest Minnesota, on
the . Chippewa Indian reservation,
which was planned to open for home
stead purposes. The money derived
from the sale will be kept for the In
dians, to be used for their care and
education.

ANNNAPOLIS, ! July 20. Under
cross-examination today, ' Lieutenant
Robert E. Adams adhered to the story
that Lieutenant James Sutton, of Port
land, whose death la being investi
gated, committed suicide.
"Will you say Sutton sulcidedr

Sutton's mother.
"I saw him move his head," replied
the witness, "as I lay on the ground.

Second Lieutenant Osterman was
the next witness. His story of tha
fight preceding the death of Sutton
differed in several ways from Adams
version. Hearing shots he ran from
the camp and saw Roellker lying on
one side of the road and Sutton on
the other. He heard somebody say:
"Sutton Bhot Roelker, then shot him
self." He never heard Sutton threaten
to kill Adams. -
Another Witness Called.
WHEELING, W. Va.,July 20.
Harry B. Thomas was today summon
ed as a witness in the Annapolis in
quiry into the death of Sutton. Ha
may throw lght on the whereabouts
of Lieutenant Edward P. Roelker, dls-
missed from the navy, the later was
wounded by Sutton in fight preceding
the latter's death.

met in a special session this afternoon
at the Commercial club to arrange a
special premium list for the list to be
appended to the regular Eastern Ore
gon district fair premium list.
There will be at least $500 worth of
premiums and if possible the new col
lection of cash prizes, with the reg
ular list, will be on its way to Salem
tomorrow for printing in pamphlet
form.
