Washington is having much more In
teresting time during her special ses
sion of the legislature than did Ore
gon. However the reputation of our
fair state suffers one in the compari
son. The next general gathering in
which the entire county Is directly
Interested will be Pioneer Day at
lmbler on the 26th. The Imbler com
mittee Is already, preparing for the
event and being centrally located un
less weather conditions are unfavor
able Pioneer Day will be largely at
tended. . The next move on the part of our
Commercial club will be the taking
up of the matter of the coming coun
ty fair. If it Is to be held in La
Grande it is time that the matter be
taken up and active work commenced.
It will require a great deal of hard
work on the part of our .citizens to
pull oft a fair, such as those deeply
Interested In the matter desire.
. ; 4
Several of our United States Sena
tors and Congressmen, whoBe repu
tation for oratory is general will be
glad to see this special seslon of con
gress adjourn so they may fill their
dates at the Cbatauqua meetings. Not
a few make more money during their
usual vacaton period tha nthey make
during their entire term of office. If
congress continues throughout the
summer Mr. Bryan will be justified
.In raising his rates. J
After the people have had a chanea
to rest and review the magnificent
features of the parade the opinion Is
onanlmous that La Grande excelled
any former attempts. There were
several floats that represented sev
eral hundred dollars each. The praise
of the people repaid all who added to
the grandure of the occasion, and
those upon whom in a large measure
the responsibility of caring for the
large crowd involved, declare that
there were more people here last
Monday than at any previous gather
ing In the history of our city.
. :
In the death of Congressman Cush
man, the State of Washington loses
the orator of her delegation In con
gress. The deceased statesman could
hardly be classed as a good looking
man and he often caused a smile In
addressing his fellow constituents by
telling a story on himself, which he
told well. A close friend of the con
gressman once told him that he con
sidered Abraham Lincoln as the moat
' Intellectual man he had ever talked
with at the same time the most home
ly and finished his sentence by say
ing and Mr. Cushman do you know
that you resemble our martyred presi
dent with a striking resemblance.

MOKKMKS IN DEMAND.
Though rain has put a temporary
stop to haying throughout the valley.
there Is a brisk demand for men at
good wages. The unusual frequency
with which rain falls this season, has
made it desirable for the farmers to
rush haying to the fullest capacity
when the sun shines.
