of Polling Cord.
TACOMA, June 29. Passengers of
the North Coast limited of the North
ern Pacific, were given the fright of
their lives early today when a heavy
train of 14 coaches came to a sudden
stop a mile from Napa Vine, at the
foot of the Cascade mountains. Vis
Ions of a holdup filled the minds of
the pasaene-er F!r.s'.n:cr Tue re
ported three sharp pulls at the bell
rope felt in the cab. Presently the
express messenger leappd from the
car and offered an explanation. It
developed three elephants were in the
baggage car. , The trainer taught
Mike," one of them, the trick of pul
ling a string with his trunk to fiie
a gun. "Mike" spied the bell rope and
took advantage of the opportunity to
do a little rehearsing, hence the stop
ping of the train.
