300 grangers and farmers assembled
at George Millers home In Lower
Cove. Saturday, at the annual grange
picnic. County Deputy C. D. Huff
man, acted as presiding officer of . the
day. The leading address of the mor
ning was given by E. D. Jasper on
"Patriotism' and in a very able man
ner be traced sectional and national
pride from the beginning to the pres
ent time. Miss Lillian Holman, a
member of the '09 class of the Wes
ton Normal, gave a very interesting
oration on "Rural Education." The
principal address of the afternoon was
delivered by Robert Withycombe,
Manager of the Cnion Experiment
station and a member of the National
Grange. In bis argument he empha

cation for farmers and pointed out the
growing tendency of the people to
drift toward the farm rather than
from it, and stated the most substan
tial cause of this movement, was the
grange. Miss Ethel Redhead, of La
Grande, in her oration entitled "Don't
be" a Knocker" answered much of the
criticism against the grange, and em-
phaaized the great work this body
is doing along social, educational and
political lines. BenJ Grout delivered
an address, "Why Boy's Leave The
Farm," and declamations were given
by Messrs Ingram and Roberts of the
Cove high school. Excellent music
was furnished by the Miller orchestra
and choir, the Lanu quartett; duets
by Miss Miller and Miss Conley, Jay
and Wilbur Shaw. Alex Robertson and
Etna Huffman and Mrs. Gray and Miss
Miller.
This blended with recitations and
double-stunts In dancing by the Mil
ler brothers, made. one of the .most
entertaining and instructive programs
given In this vicinity.
At noon a good old-fashoned picnic
dinner was spread. , The members of
mi. rannie Grange of Cove, served
coffee, lemonade and Strawberries,
and presented the visiting grangers
with souvenir badges of the grange
colors. All present expressed their
appreciation of Mr. Miller's ability as
a host; and went to their many
homes much pleased with the suc
cess of the second annual grange picnic.
