Society is pricking up is ears at
the Fourth of July ball, conducted on
the pay for each dance basis, to be
held Monday afernoon and evening.
The pioneers of Linn county held
a three days meeting last week, and
during this time it is reported that
fully 20,000 people visited the groundB.
L. Couch, the real estate man of
Wallowa, came over Friday to ac
company home Mrs. Couch, who has
been visiting here for the past week.
They returned home this morning.
George Stoddard. J. R. Price and
F. S. Bramwell, returned last even
ing from Baker City where they con
ducted a conference of the Baker
county stake yesterday., .
Miss Lottie Wall, who arrived from
the east recently, will teach, here next
year, left last night for Baker City,
where she will attend Prof. Churchill's
Summer Normal.

Wallowa county. He has several or
ders for train loads of stock out of
that county' the coming week.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Rlnehart and
son returned to their home near Sum
merville today after spending a few
days with Doctor and Mrs. P. A.
Charlton. They attended the Rine
nart reunion at Freewater. '
James Peach returned home this
morning from Payette where he has
been attending the Adventlst's camp
meeting. He reports a most success
ful meeting and Is loud In this praise
of the treatment accorded the dele
Sates by the people of Payette.
Mr. and Mrs. N. Nelson and daugh
ter Miss Genevieve leave tomorrow to
w gone several weeks. They will go
to San Francisco and returning, spend
few days at the A-T-P. Mr. Nelson
Is one of the car inspectors in the
local yards. ' '
John Kircher a former resident of
this city, but for several years a resi
dent of Vale, Is here looking after
his property Interests. Mr. Kircher
has oil fields In the vicinity of Vale
that are giving promise of soon be
coming producers and that capital Is
Investing heavily.
As the day approaches for the de
parture of the Elk's excursion from
Baker City and other Northwest points
for Los Angeles to attend the big
gathering there, Interest is Increasing
here and it Is probable that more than
half a dozen besides the regular dele
Sates will make the trip.
It Is evident that there will be no
Promotions from the local railroad
circles following the promotion of
Superintendent D. W. Campbell to the
O- & W. w. Bollons, general road
master, takes Campbell's place, and
BolloVs boots will be filled by some
one not living In La Grande,'. very
