Night Policeman McLaughlin cap
tured a huge porcupine last evening.
The "arrest" was made on the main
street, and the officer had all sorts
of amusement getting the prickly ani
mal into a wooden box. Today the
creature attracted considerable at
tention and created amusement as
well for some wag had pinned on a
notice to Poundmaster Black that.the
animal had been found running at
large and was ordered into pound.
Advertising and subsequent Bale was
ordered with Instructions that the re
ceipts be turned over to .Treasurer
Logan. Just what will be done with
the animal has not been determined.

As was predicted In the Observer
yesterday, J. H. Watson won the race
for . director in the school board,
hands down, expressed in street par
lance. Out of 83 votes cast, he se
cured 78, the other five being scat
tering, not more than two going to
any one man.
Last evening the old board met and
Chairman Bay retired in favor of
Henry Fenson who is the next oldest
director. Mr. Watson was sworn in
and is now in office. Routine mat
ters, such as auditing bills consumed
the evenlng'B attention.

W. E. Thompson, of Enid, Okla.,
and G. F. Sucher, of Boone county,
Iowa, have been in the city for the
past few days looking for a location.
They were shown over the valley by
a local real estate man yesterday and
are very enthusiastic over this lo
cality, especially the Cove country.
Mr. Sucher returned to Nam pa, Idaho,
where his family is stopping, this
morning. He will make arrange
ments to move his family here at
once. Mr. Thompson thinks that this
s th best place that they have visi
ted yet. They will probably- buy land
in the Cove.

New plate glass will adorn the
front of the Lottes building on Jef
ferson avenue, for already, the heavy
plates have been set and glass doors

commendable changes in the appear
ances of the place and helps improve
the looks of the otherwise obnoxious
fronts in that block.

ELECTION.
Notice Is hereby given to the legal
voters of school district No. 1, of Un
ion county, State of Oregon, that the
ANNUAL SCHOOL MEETINGS for
said district will be held at High
School building in said district, to
begin at the hour of 2 o'clock p. m. on
the third Monday of June, being the
21st day of June, A. D. 1909.
This meeting is called for the pur
pose of electing one director to serve
for five years, and the transaction of
business usual at such meetings.
Said election shall be held from 2
p. m. until 6 p. m. and it shall be by
ballot.
