BOOK OUT
John Collier, a director In the Ore
gon state organization of grocers, is
handsomely portrayed in a splendid
souvenir booklet issued by the Na
tional Association of Grocers' conven
tion In Portland which was attended
by A. S. Geddes of this city. Local
members of the organization have
received copies of the booklet, which
is descriptive of Oregon, Portland and
more generally devoted to affairs of
the recent convention.

Local baseball enthusiasts and busi
ness ninn of Elgin met last Monday
night in the rear room of the City
cigar store, and the baseball situation
locally, was thoroughly . canvassed.
The sense of the meeting appeared to
be that local pride demanded that
Elgin quit - her monkeydoodle busi
ness and put up a better quality of
baseball than she has been doing.
Elgin has the groundwork requisite
for the formation of a club that is
bound to be a league beater, and with
alight addition to her Buperexcellent
line-up there is no reason why Elgin
should not stand, at the head of the
Eastern Oregon Amateur League.
The merchants and business men
of Elgin have responded liberally to
the calls made upon them In this mat
ter, and they have a right to see
something of their money. This they
will certainly get under the new or
ganization and management. D. A.
Barnes was elected manager; Ivan
Thomas secretary and treasurer; C.
W. Towner, captain. Elgin Recorder.
SCHEDULE
ED
To accommodate the excursionists
to Joseph tomorrow, the Amateur
league schedule has been changed for
one day. Cove will play Elgin at
Joseph tomorrow. The Cove team is
already there, and in this way two
fast games will be seen tomorrow at
Joseph for Wallowa is sending
strong team to the same grounds
Otherwise than this, there win be no
change, Baker City coming here with
a new line-up as was announced by
the Observer several days ago, and
Union going to Huntington to play
the speedy aggregation at the gate
way.
Will Wright to Retire.
After the first of July, Cashier Will
Wright, of the First National bank of
Union, will sever his connection with

that bank, with which he has been
connected for many years, Mr.
Wright has not fully determined
where he will locate, but thinks ser
iously of going to Spokane. Union
Republican.
Has New Snare Dram.
Al Heisner the cleve snare drum
mer in the La Grande band will in
troduce to the public tomorrow, a fine
new drum. Its tone Is much better
than the one he has been using and
he will bring out the rolls with added
lust hreafter.
Express in liox far.
A very ordinary box car today was
drafted into service as an express car
on the Joseph' run. The amount of
business, mail, express and baggage,
is such that it often overruns the ca
pacity of the accommodations.
