RUMORS IH
PORTLAND
The Portland Telegram relates the
following, pertaining to the Central
Railway Company's future plans:
Reports from Eastern Oregon are
to the effect that the recently reor
ganized Central Railway Intends to
build during the next year 88 miles
of railroad which will give it connec
tors with the O. R. & N. at Union
Junction and with Northern Pacific
at Walla Walla. The new corpora
tion Is known as the Central Railway
of Oregon, and Is owned and ''con
trolled by (New Haven and Boston
capitalists. General Manager R. II.
England left for the . East two days
ago to take up preliminary arrange
ments for the immediate construction
of the 88 miles projected with the di
rectors of the road. It is planned to
spend about $1,500,000 on the road

statements made by Mr. England be
fore his departure. J
The original plans of the Central
Oregon 'Rail way contemplated simply
the construction of a line of about
two miles from Union to Union June
tlon, on the O. R. & N., and about, 12
miles from Union to Cove. The new
company, however, is deeply Inter
ested in the development of the large
area of thickly timbered country in
that region, and plans to run a line
about 12 or 15 miles up Katherlne
Creek, in Union county, to a belt o'
yellow pine, estimated to ruti between
2,000,000,000; and 3,000OOO,OOO - fe.
Yellow pine stump'age In that' section
is worth about $1.25.
The larger project from Cove to
Walla Walla, giving outlet via the
Northern Pacific, will tap an immen
sely rich country which la at present
entirely unprovided with transporta
tion facilities. It is understood that
there are no serious problems of rail
road building, though there Is an el
evation of about 1200 feet to be over
come, but this can be done at fav
orable grade, it is said. .

After careful scrutiny of the1 vigi
lance kept by Union county" prchard
ists against inroads of fruit tree pests,
County Fruit Inspector Oldenberg
states that with few exceptions, there
is united war against the pests. How
ever, he finds some are negligent in
their obvious duty and are neglecting
the task. His advice and earnest sup
plication to these is to get to work
with arsenate of lead spray. The
time is at hand to do this work, and
no energy should be wasted or time
spared In commencing spraying.
