They were on their way to Joseph
to make arrangements for an outing
to be given, by the engineers of La
Grande to Wallowa Lake on Sunday,
June 20. A rate of one fare for the
round trip will be made , from all
points on this branch for' the occas
ion. Mr. Currey informed us 'that his
town is going to outdo everything that
ever happened In the way of a Fourth
of July celebration. Not only is the
eagle to scream over our national
birthday but it will celebrate at the
same time the first dirtthrowing for
the Meadowbrook project When
completed this will place 30,000 acres
under cultivation. The reservoir will
cover 740 acre and the avfrnew rfonth
will be 54 feet.
As to the celebration on the Fourth
those gentlemen say that their town
is going to combine about a dozen
celebrations of the ordinary sort into
one grand glorious, never to be for
gotten "high jinks." Mr. Currey will
personally superintend the tying of,
the boquet to the eagle's tail while

valley will have an opportunity to

Prof. Hockenberry will address the
young people at the First Methodist
Episcopal church next Sunday even

hear Mr. Hockenberry before he
leaves for his new field In Portland.
Having been associated so Intimately
with the young people for eight years
It will be a pleasure to have as many
of them present as possible to hear

When Mr. Hockenberry speaks it
is always worth while to listen, but
his farewell words will be of special

Delegate C. E. Happersett, who rep
resented - the local brotherhood of
trainmen af the national convention
at Columbus, Ohio, for three days and
was called back by the Illness of his
father at Portland, arrived last even
ing from the metropolis. Mr. Happer
sett's father died last Sunday and the
funeral was held Tuesday.
At Columbus, Mr. Happersett atten
ded but few sessions of the conven
tion. In fact the monster gathering
of delegates had barely organized it
self when the message calling him
home, was delivered there. Close and
detailed correspondence with the local
brotherhood, and the printed min
utes will keep the local members In
touch with the legislation though no
representative Is on the scene.

There is a piece of ground along
the railroad, in the lower end of the
experiment grounds that shows evi
dence of good farming. It is as level

there are Indications of a master hand
In the work. As a matter of fact

tical at the experiment station this
year, and that institution is taking on
an air of thoroughness that looks good
