Three carloads of material for the
new refuse burner to be erected by
the George Palmer Lumber Company,
have arrived and two more are on the
way. Among the material now on
hand are 4200 pound of rivets to
be used in the constructin.
The burner is to be 27 feet In di
ameter and sufficiently high to clea,'
adjoining buildings. Even the heat
generated by the burning waste will
not let go unused for an 18-inch wa
ter jacket will surround the burner
and as the refuse is burning up, this
water will be heated and the steam
piped to the new pond that is beiii
constructed to keep the water ther,
from freezing and obstructing shifting
of the logs during cold weather.
A new pump of the Fairbanks
make, and similar to the one now
used will be Installed soon.
NORTH POWDER PUPILS
LEAD IN BRIGHTNESS
North Powder furnished the class
of elgth grade pupils who proved to
be the most thorough in scholarship
during the recent grade examinations
held throughut the county. The ex
amining board. Miss Ruth Bush, Miss
Syra Kuhn and Miss Gertrude Biever,
all of the La Grande schools, finished
their work late yesterday afternoon
and found that out of more than a
100 pupils only 43 passed in all their
studies, but that about as many more
succeeded in all but one or two
studies. These latter may have an
other trial in June, and it Is probable
that all of them will pass at that
time. The North Powder class were
all successful.
