The county purchasing a poor farm
eleminates the Idea of the county and
citizens buying the fair grounds. The
question now is, what is to be done
towards having a county fair this year,
and if so, what kind? If it Is to be a
repetition of the fairs of the past few
years, it would be much better not
to make any attempt whatever. For
the past two or three years there
have been two ideas discussed, one
is to reorganize the fair on the pres
ent basis, only begin early in the
season and enlist the farming inter
ests and make them know that there
is going to be a fair, and a fair that
is worthy of the united support of the
county. , This will require the active
efforts of an enthusiastic committee.
It will require th ofrr f yrlzc;
sufficient to make It an object for the
farmers to put their exhibition stock
In shape and grow prize-winning pro
duce. The races must not he the
whole show.
The other Idea Is for the fair to be
held In La Grande, no races whatever,
similar to the fairs which have been
so successfully held in Pendleton for
the past three years. An exhibit of
the fruits and products of the county
combined with a stock and poultry
show, the. admission being only 15
cents. Under present conditions th'
Observer believes the Pendleton plan
backed by the business interests of
La Grande is tha thing to do. How
ever, what ever Is to be done should
be decided upon and active work com
menced. Either plan can be made
successful, but neither can be made
so two or three weeks prior to the
opening date.
Tha copy for the premium list,
should be in the hands of the sta'e
printer now and distributed early In
June so that the farmers could know
iiow to prepare. To make a count)
fair successful it is necessary to en
list early, the enthusiastic and active
support of those who grow the ex
hibits. ManZnn Piie Remedy Is put up l.i
