Twenty Japanese arrived today
from Portland as the advance guard
of the' foreigners that will be em
ployed to do the thinning and weeding
of Amalgamated Sugar Company beet
fields. This is in accordance with the
policy of the company to re-adopt the

out last season but proved anything
but satisfactory.
The arrival of the Japs is the riign

Eighteen Dellars Paid For One Crate
of Walla Walla Product.
The first chate ofs strawberrie
grown in the Walla Walla valley this
year sold this morning for $18, whieu
is at the rate of 75c a box, says u
Walla Walla paper. They were raised
on the tract owned by Fred Beller at
Locust, Or., just this side of Free
water, and sold to the branch house
of L. L. tlunt Co. at .Sunnyside. two
and a half imles from Freewater. The
berries were shipped to Spokane,
where they will be retailed at a lan
der figure than paid here.
'Bidding for the berries was keen,
all the produce houses wishing to gi-t
the first crate. The L. L. Hunt com
pany finally won out over the Walla

ing about the convention to be held
there. A circular letter says:
There will be a great convention of
the Presbyterian Broiherhood in Port
land June 8 and U, Utuit. All the Pres
byterian churches of Oregon ;tre bein.
